Hello! I am a high school junior from a rural district in Maryland. I was wondering what I should work on this year to make my future application stronger.
  1. 1440 SAT (770 English—Reading 40, Writing 37; 670 Math—33.5)
  2. GPA: 4.11
  3. President of the National French Honors Society, and I earned the Seal of Biliteracy after 3 years of French
  4. Elected team leader of my unit in We the People (a governmental speaking and writing course—my class won both Districts and States competitions, and we are advancing to Nationals!)
  5. 1 year varsity winter track; likely varsity outdoor (upcoming season)
  6. 2 years junior varsity tennis
  7. 2 years student government
  8. Physics Olympics participant
  9. Top 10% in my class
  10. 5 on AP Gov test; am taking AP Bio and AP Lit this year
  11. Member of my church council for 2 years
  12. 5 months work experience at local bed and breakfast
  13. 127 hours of volunteer work (90 required)—also, I’m trying out for a position where I take care of a homestead on a local battlefield/ National Park. Some of my hours were for volunteering at a local veteran’s support group/store
Thank you so much for any advice. USNA has been my dream since 4th grade, and I’m trying to do everything I can to make it happen!

Start preparing for the CFA and try to get a captaincy, if possible, on one of your athletic teams.
Thanks—I work on my pushups every day (about 35, female) and go to the gym on the weekends to swim. Unfortunately, my school doesn’t really do team captains—it’s just up to the seniors to lead.

You look very good to me.

Boys/girls state is a good endeavor to look into.
Thank you! I’ve been looking into Girl’s State, but my school is the only one in the area that doesn’t directly offer it. I’ve been coordinating with my counselors and other schools to see if it could still be a possibility.

Practice the CFA like a real test, in sequence with rest periods. Fatigue is a factor, especially on the run.

Try contacting an American Legion Post. Sometimes they'll sponsor someone although it may be on your own dime.

I’’ll look into that—the reason that my school doesn’t participate is something to do with the fact that the legion is right in town, which is a bit ironic!

This looks amazing... as everyone is saying, make sure you are physically able to excel in the CFA... that said, I would recommend that you think about what contributions you have made to the many ECs you are involved in... provide some statistics and thoughts around what you did within these groups and how you advanced the program or cause... be prepared to talk about your involvement, contribution and how you may have changed the trajectory of the program through your guidance and leadership. Good luck and keep up the great work.

contact the local legion auxiliary directly or your state headquarters. they can help. my DD wanted to go but the HS had no clue. contacted the auxiliary directly and now they are sponsoring her this June

You didn't mention the courses you've taken. Make sure you've covered Calc, Chem and Physics. Be sure your senior year is filled primarily with core courses (the above, advanced language, English, history).

Do something productive this summer. This could be a job, significant volunteer work, sports camps, etc. Don't just stay home and "work on applications" the entire summer.

Fully agree to give some thought to what you DO as a leader. It's not just about being elected/selected, it's about leading. Give some thought to what you can do over the summer and next year, first semester.

Finally, talk to your junior English and math teachers. Let them know how important USNA is to you and let them know they can expect an email from USNA once your application is open and you've supplied their contact info.
