Hello Parents- Can you please tell me how your MOC (Member of Congress: Senator or House) notified your son or daughter that they were receiving an APPOINTMENT offer to one of the academies? Was your student surprised by the notification? Any helpful suggestions for announcements to future appointees? Thanks, a congressional staffer :)

My oldest was not notified at all.

My youngest was notified via a phone call to our home.

I will say, that it’s quite the honor to receive a call. They are very much appreciated.

Did your MOC make the call personally or did the staffer?

My MOC made the call themselves to let me know of my appointment.
It was a huge surprise and honor. I talked with my MOC for a couple minutes- they wanted to know if they were the first to let me know, and if I planned to attend, and I of course wanted to thank them again for the nomination, and for personally calling me to let me know about the appointment offer.

Our MOC called my ds personally twice to inform him of his appointments last year (once for USMA and once for USAFA). His staffer also called to personally offer her congrats as well because she was the one talking to the candidates during the process.

Our MOC made a personal phone call to my DS cell phone last year and left him a message with his own cell number and congratulations. DS played that message several times over the next couple of days!! Very well received and made DS feel pretty good about the whole thing.

I had to call the head staffer of my representative to get confirmation. That was back during COVID so it's probably different now. Key to note is that it differs heavily between states.

Best piece of advice I can give is to be a squeaky wheel. If they don't tell you, keep asking. Eventually, they have to give you an answer.

For appointments, MOC did not notify at all.

For nominations, MOC sent a congratulatory letter using a fancy stationery.

Our DS was notified of his nomination by phone call from MOC staffer. Received letter from MOC within a week.

I've recounted this before on the forum. First notification was email from USNA to daughter. I (not my daughter) received the call from MOC. Very gracious and complimentary, but thought it odd daughter didn't get a call.

DS saw nominations in the portal prior to letters being received from MOCs.

He had a missed call from an unknown number while he was in Honors American History, despite his mom's advice he didn't have a voicemail set up. He lost some sleep over that one.

Turned out that the call was from the senior Senator to let him know of the principal nomination.

In mid-January, I was asked to stay late at work (I worked at his high school) and the student government class was asked to come to the counseling office (he was in that class). We were all standing around looking confused when the phone rang, the counselor put it on speaker phone and it was the junior Senator staff member. She asked who was in the room, and by this time, all admin, support staff, custodians, and his teachers were in the room, she then asked if they all knew he had applied to USNA, and she explained the process and how difficult and competitive it was. He looked so confused. She then asked him if he still wanted to attend and he said yes. She said, well, that's good to hear because you have been appointed to USNA. He had to sit down, fast. I was bawling, the teachers were crying, and the kids were clapping and hugging him. The counselors and custodians who had been his cheerleaders were all teary-eyed. It was awesome. Won't ever forget it.

Very special for the Senator's staff to go to the trouble to call the school and ask them to arrange it. I was stunned. He told me later he thought it was a call from their former teacher for Student Government and she was calling to get on their butts to help the new teacher out. Once the staffer came on, he was firmly convinced it was a call to tell him about his nomination from the Junior Senator.

Great moment.

By the time DS eventually got his waiver and his LOA became appointment, no notification of any kind was sent.

Our MOC invites all nominated to a "meet and greet" not giving anything away in the invitation. When parents and nominees are all there for a little reception, the MOC congratulates the nominees. It's a nice surprise.

Crazy its been two years. Our MOC called our daughter directly over Thanksgiving Weekend receiving her Nomination. Excited definitely. The Appointment was received via USNA web portal. Again excited. And then in early May, the MOC had a meet and greet with those nominated to the service academies. The MOC gave a framed Certificate of Recognitions to the Nominated candidates. Those that showed up to the meet and greet, were 7 or 8 candidates to USNA, two to Air Force, one to West Point and one to Coast Guard Academy. The MOC gave her personal cell phone to the candidates. And asked the candidates and their parents if they would change the process. It was the MOC's first term and first time nominating.

DS received the call today directly from our Congressman, and we are all ecstatic. He said it was a great conversation and was thanked for all he has done within his JROTC program and his accomplishments over the years. My son was sure to confirm with him if it was indeed an appointment to USMA, or if it was the nomination he was calling to congratulate about (which we only knew through the WP portal). I'm very appreciative the congressman called him directly because he provided some insight that he was by far the most qualified of the group. I think he needed that moral boost after months upon months of wondering if he's actually qualified. He also asked DS to please follow up with him directly along the way to see where he ends up in his military career.

A suggestion for announcements for future appointees would be to have the MOC call directly, because it makes the whole process more personal and the applicant can at least see that the MOC has some knowledge of who the appointee is who their office nominates. It would also be nice for those who do not receive a nomination to receive something in writing letting them know if they were rejected. By far the worst part of waiting I'm sure is waiting with no response.

I got an email from my main contact with the office, a staffer, asking when I could hop on a Zoom call to talk about the "status of my application." At that point, you already know you're getting an appointment...but I already knew because I got an LOA and the nom was the final piece of the puzzle that showed up on my portal. Anyway, I got on the Zoom call and my MOC let me know that I got an appointment! I would recommend this route, because it makes for a really cool press opportunity as they recorded the meeting and make a Youtube video each year with all the district appointees. I feel like it's super cool for the appointee, because a face-to-face call is really nice, and good for the office too. Politicians like publicity and all that.

EDIT: I'm not a parent btw...

My daughter got a phone call from our Rep for USNA, he was a grad too so it was a great phone call.

Agree that the call makes it really personal & a very nice attention to detail. DD missed a Friday call from MOC, and portal updated on a Monday with her appointment. Call from MOC came again later that day. She was double-psyched (had already accepted the USAFA appt).
