How often is it seen that a candidate is accepted to all 3 major academies? Happen very often? Curious more than anything.

What are the chances of a candidate receiving appointments to all 3 major academies. Has it been done often? Just curious

Yes, it happens. The stats may be out there somewhere.

I recommend against referring to the three DOD academies as the “major academies.” That could be taken as saying USCGA and USMMA are “minor,” or lesser in some way, which they are certainly not. They are right-sized for their missions. And yes, there are those who have been offered appointments to all 5.

Agreed. There are not major or minor ones, but maybe more well or lesser known. All the perfect sizes for their missions! I don't know the stats and I didn't know there were stats out there, but obviously the more you apply to, maybe the higher chance. I applied to all 5, got into 4, went to prep via AOG Scholarship, and am now at West Point. There are many paths! Choose the one that best fits you!

I responded to same post in another SA forum. Dupe posts are usually not necessary to elicit responses.

Mods - recommend thread merge.

Most likely only when someone applies in a state where multiple nominations are given out AND someone can't decide what service they want to go into after they graduate so they apply to multiple academies.

Wonder what the "major academies" are?

The 3 academies under DoD: West Point, Annapolis, and Air Force. USMMA is a federal maritime college with a mandatory NROTC program. USCGA is a federal law enforcement school under DHS. If you actually look, USMMA is looked at as a large NROTC program by big Navy in that they maintain naval science instructors and conduct BCA/PRT as needed. I don't take offense to the 3 major academies.

A few years ago there was a boy in my son's Boy Scout Troop who got into the USAFA, USMA, and USNA.

My DS applied to 3 SA. He got appointments to both USNA and USMA. He applied to USAFA but did not get the necessary nom for Air Force to get the appointment. So USAFA is out of the picture. I presume that he failed to get the nom because when he went to his MOC interviews they knew he got his LOA from USMA since Oct and one state senator nominated him there. When he went to our Congressman interview in December, he had received his LOA from USNA as well so the Congressman gave nom to both academies. I have heard that if the MOC knows you have an LOA, you are most likely to get appointment from that academy and therefore they will give others a chance to get the noms to other academies you applied to " spread the wealth". I understand because we also have a competitive MOC slate.

I am beyond humbled.
3 appointments in hand. LOA to USAFA, LOA to USMA and principle nomination to USNA. I have narrowed it down to two.
Would you mind sharing some of your stats so we have a general picture of what it would take to be offered a spot at 3 SA's?

While awesome stats are for sure a determinant in in being offered a spot to 3 or 5 academies, the piece one would NEVER be able to find a causation relationship for would be the nomination piece (if a nom is required). How MOC’s delve out their noms, etc. Additionally, how many that WOULD receive appointments to all, actually fill out apps to all 5.

So like many things surrounding this enigma of an appointment, there really isn’t any way to compile any meaningful data.
