Army ROTC 2022-2023 2nd Board

@AetosSA @Momtomany

I am not here to burst bubbles, but I am a pragmatic person and want to provide realistic expectation management. I can be very sure, in that the Scholarship Program Manager at Cadet Command briefs the ROOs in my BDE every year on the National HS Scholarship Process. Typically, the top 1000 students get a 4yr, the next 2000 are offered a 3YR, then the next 1000 are offered a 2yr MJC scholarship. Offers made prior to the 3rd board, are based on your projected place on the OML based on historical numbers. If offered a 2yr scholarship, you are projected to have a lower OML score than those who will receive a 3YR offer. However you could be high enough that when all applicants are boarded, that you actually had a score high enough for a 3yr scholarship, just as some 3YR offers will be upgraded to a 4YR, as they actually placed in the top 1000. Based on this, I find it extremely unlikely that anyone offered a 2YR has later been offered a 4YR scholarship.

The GPA/SAT scores you have listed are highly competitive compared to the past winners. However, that is only one small portion of the Whole Person Score (WPS) that is used for scholarship selection. The WPS breaks down as follows:

Board: 350 (25%)
SAT/ACT: 249 (18%)
Cadet Background Experience Form (CBEF): 250 (18%)
Extracurricular Activities (SAL): 201 (14%)
PMS Interview: 200 (14%) [GPA + SAT account for either 0, 20, or 40 pts of these 200, you would've received the full 40 on your scores]
Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA): 150 (11%)

When it comes down to it, GPA+SAT only accounts for around 25% of the WPS. So there are many candidates with excellent academic achievements that do not receive a scholarship offer. The PMS interview tends to have a significant influence in overall OML results in that tends to be the tie breaker among candidates, plus the PMS selects whether to recommend the applicant for a scholarship or not, and that PMS interview influences the scholarship board members in the points that they assign to the applicant.

I do hope that you end up being high enough on the OML to get a 3yr scholarship, but my goal on these forums is to provide accurate, unbiased information. Makes sure you are in contact with the ROO at the school you want to attend, as some schools are given a hip pocket 3yr scholarship after the board process to give it out to whomever they want. I tend to give my hip pocket scholarship to a non-selected national applicant that I have been in good communication with, as they have the interest and I already have access to all of their relevant information. I am sure other ROOs do the same.
Appreciate the first hand experience and for assisting in keeping things realistic. We will just hold out hope for the best and I am sure my son will stay on contact with his Roo at his #1 for guidance on campus scholarships in the event he doesn’t get a National scholarship!
I know you had said 1000 2 year scholarships are given out…do they get used? On a side note, when my son was offered this after the first board (and politely declined) he did a ton of research and we even visited the one closest to our home. They only had like 60ish cadets in the program (including both freshmen and sophomores)…we thought that was interesting.

Question: DS has a friend who is exceptionally well-qualified but who apparently did not complete an application for a 4-year national scholarship BUT (and this is hearsay from my DS) the ROTC unit at the school she is planning on attending has offered her a 3-year scholarship. Does this sound right? Insight into this particular process would be appreciated.
That doesn't sound right as ROTC programs don't get the hip pocket scholarship until around May after the National Process is complete. They could be saying they will give her one, but they don't actually have one to give at the moment. That scholarship offer actually comes from Cadet Command, but it is initiated by the host program. Cadet Command is not giving scholarships that way while the National Process is still ongoing.

No, not all scholarship offers are used. The push with the 2YR scholarship offers is to help feed the MJCs, and the MJCs typically only produce officers for the reserve components.

How did your son do on the PFA? If he takes it again with a higher score, then can be uploaded and give him a few extra points on his application. SATs and PFT scores are the only thing that can be improved once boarded.

That clears it up that they can't officially offer the scholarship until at least May and explains my kid's inability to be precise about the status of her scholarship. I feel bad because her high school always does a good job of publicizing SA appointments and ROTC scholarships (latest batch just came out) and she'll miss out on that.

Thank you! But we should keep an eye put for the link to get the process started?
Just to add on. DS time period went from Yes I received a scholarship to OMG what is all this paperwork I have to do. I believe his DoDMERB was within a week. He had to schedule appointments with all the approved providers in our area from what I remember.
Definitely better to knock it out ASAP in case some additional appointments are needed or things are taking to long.

He did well on his PFA, but I am sure there is always room for improvement. He has continued training since he took it in September, so I believe it is his plan to retake and see if he improves. His SAT was pretty strong too, and I don’t think he will re-take that. Thanks again!! We are keeping all things crossed!

For anyone who did receive a 3-4yr scholarship, could you share what you got on the PFT? Thanks.
My stats were a little low but I have definitely improved since then and will take it again before the March board.
Here's what I got in December:
Pushups/min: 42
Situps/min: 51
1-mile run: 6:22

If you're looking to improve your push-ups, there's a Stew Smith video on how to increase your push-ups in 2 weeks. It worked for my son!

Thanks so much for the info!
Is this the plan you were talking about?
My pushup weakness seems rather strange to me, because I can generally do 13 dead-hang pull ups in a set.

I had seen a video, but reading through this it seems roughly the same.

Does anyone know if my DS accepts the 3 year Army ROTC Scholarship? Would he be eligible for an upgrade to a 4 year later if possible? Or would his acceptance of the 3 year that's opting out of an opportunity to gain a 4 year in the future?

He can accept and still be upgraded.

Question for anyone here who might know: if i accept my AROTC Scholarship to a specific school like required, will the other 2 schools be made aware I didn’t choose them? I’m talking to all 3 of my scholarship schools in different capacities than just ROTC, and I’m afraid if they see I didn’t choose them that might turn them off me a little bit.
I felt them same way last year. My DS got 4 year to his top 3 and was working with all three on merit scholarships. I don't think it bothers them. He had 2 of his top 7 (not in the top three) reach out to try to get him to transfer his scholarship he also had 2 schools reach out that weren't even in his top 7. I think they can access the list of winners. Bottom line transfers happen.....last minute decision happen. They understand.

Scholarship winner should be checking email and junk mail regularly for the first contact from Dodmerb/Dodmets to schedule the initial exams. Not sure how soon, all I k ow is DS missed the first notice and received second one a week before he was leaving for school, so he’s been working on it since September. It would have been easier to get the initial exams done before he left of course. Now currently working through the waiver process and it’s February. Start as early as possible

I will preach this every results board posting.
DS grew up in one house and we only used 1 primary care doctor.

It still took a couple of weeks to request and receive all his records. Of course there was the urgent visit for a broken bone, etc. 1 surgery from a doctor couldn't remember from 10 years ago, etc. More requests. You get the idea.

One of the last visits we had to visit two hours from our house for a certain specialist. It would be impossible to get this done while in school.

Get all of that ASAP. Have them scheduling the exams and whatever is needed. Its the next mission. You have won the scholarship now on to this.
