Army ROTC 2023-2024 3rd Board

Doesn't the 3rd board meet March 18-22, 2024?
Yes. This is the 3rd thread in the line up, which is why it has the 2023-2024 dates. Many of us have been through all the fun and suspense that the October 23, January 24 and now March 24 boards has to offer us. 😆

My daughter was awarded a 3 yr on the second board. I asked the PMS at the college she’ll be attending if there’s a possibility of it being upgraded this round and he specifically said there will be no upgrades for current scholarship offers. Has anyone else heard this?

no I heard from several different sources that you can be upgraded. In fact yesterday my DS submitted a new CFA and updated a few other items and was told there was a strong likelihood he would be upgraded to a 4 year. Hopefully I am being given correct information.

That would be great. I was surprised by his repo se to my question in an email. Curious if anyone else has contact with one and can ask the same question. I know it can and has happened, but he was adamant that it was a no.

TLDR: You still have a chance at a 4-year scholarship, regardless of what award you did or did not receive from past boards. It's just going to come down to where you sit on the master Order of Merit List and how many total scholarships are available.

I am almost certain this is bad information. Unless the Army has made a major change to how scholarships are awarded, my understanding is that there are a certain number of 4-year scholarships to be awarded and they WILL be awarded. So, for sake of discussion, lets say there are 1,000 4-year scholarships this year and 600 have been handed out so far. That means there are 400 more available for the March board.

Now, keep in mind that everyone whose application was reviewed at either the October or January boards is already scored and on the OML. Only new applications will be reviewed by the March board. Now, those applications are reviewed by the board, scored and those people are slotted into the existing OML list accordingly.

At that point, the OML is final for the 2023-24 award year. At that point, there is a "cutoff" line established for 4-year scholarships and everyone above that line -- whether it be a new applicant or a previous applicant -- is awarded a 4-year scholarship. This means that someone who just applied in March could get one, someone who received a 3-year offer in a previous board could get one, and even some people who got no scholarship offer previously could get one, depending on where they sit on the OML and the number of scholarships to be awarded.

Then, below the 4-Year cutoff, everyone from there on down would be awarded a 3-Year AD scholarship until the available scholarships are exhausted.

Our resident ROOs and PMSs can chime in here and offer their own information, but having gone through this with my DS this past year and spent probably way too much time trying to understand it all, this is my best understanding of how the process works.

We asked the ROO at The Citadel and his response was "there's no way to know prior to the March board. It has to do with scoring and OML."

I think you can take that as an acknowledgement that upgrades are possible, but no one official really wants to play the game of "chancing" your particular odds.

Nice summary! By "only new applications will be reviewed" do you mean that improvements or edits to January applications will not result in improved scores (e.g. new PFT or additional activities, etc..)?

Each candidate is boarded only ONCE. If you submit an improved SAT/ACT score, or an improved PFT, yes, you will pick up some points and possibly move up on the OML.

However, anything that would be considered by the board as part of the board score, such as becoming a team captain or joining more activities, won't do you any good if you've already been boarded in October or January. Bottom line is, no human is ever going to actually look at your file again.

This is my 2nd son through the process. Each of the past few years here there have been members of this board who received a 3 year on board 1 and get upgraded to a 4 year on board 3. The description above is exactly how I understand the process. That being said my son is a current 3 year winner and he mentioned to 2 of his ROO that he was waiting to see if he gets upgraded. One said "that is always a possibility " the other replied "Rarely does Cadet Command upgrade to 4-year scholarships." I think some ROOs are focused on getting you to accept and get you in the door.

Just a point of clarification, I think you meant to say a 3-year on Board 2 and 4-year on Board 3. Because I am pretty sure only 4-year scholarships are awarded at the October board.

That said, I definitely agree that most ROOs seem not to want to discuss the possibility of an upgrade. One, it's certainly no guarantee. And two, they'd much rather focus on what you already have (a 3-year) and what you're going to do with it. And that's all well and good, but you bet your sweet rear moms and dads everywhere are hoping for that upgrade! :)

Yes I will take all the scholarship money DS can get! It is crazy the merit that is offered or not offered to kids. My sons are unweighted 3.5 GPA, 4.0 GPA, 3.8 GPA and there are big differences. DS1 is loaded up with loans since he got next to nothing offered. The funny thing is he is about to graduate college with honors in 4 years. All 3 of my boys are pretty similar and to see the opportunities offered or not offered based on slight differences in HS GPA is disheartening.

i am extremely nervous for this board. during the last one in january, i finished my packet a month early and saw my status change to boarded, only to be told that the board just never got around to reading my packet. i’m praying that does not happen again

Something doesn't add up here. If your status changed to boarded, then that would indicate you were reviewed by the board.

Who, exactly, told you that your packet was not reviewed?

Maybe he misunderstood and thought you were asking if the college would upgrade it?

you can get clarification from the email contact assigned to you. They are responsive and helpful. If your status said boarded you were reviewed.
