I am in need of some help. I am currently an MS4 nursing student who is contracted. I have a 2 and a half year scholarship. I do not graduate till December of 2019, and have not assessed. I am wanting to disenroll and have contacted my PMS and HR and they have told me that I do not have the option of paying back or enlisting, but that it will be chosen for me by the Secretary of the Military.

My question is how likely is it if I choose to pay back all of the money owed, that they will pick for me to enlist?

-Thank you

Impossible to say, although the few that I have seen that recently went through disenrollment were given the payback option. It will all depend on the needs of the Army, the reasons for disenrollment may come into play as well. In the end it is the Army's decision to make and nobody here will be able to give you an answer one way or the other.

What does that mean though “the needs of the army?”
The needs of the Army depend on its recruitment goals and if they achieved them or not.

For the first time since 2005, the U.S. Army missed its recruiting goal in 2018, falling short by about 6,500 soldiers,*

The fact that the Army is short 6,500 enlistees, does not bode well for your hope to pay back and walk away. On the other hand the Army greatly prefers to have enlistees who WANT to be there as opposed to individuals who are reluctant to serve.

You had better hope that the Army is meeting its 2019 goals and then some.

Even if the Army was *exceeding* their allotment of nurses, they still need double what they have based on what my daughter dealt with at Fort Sam in San Antonio. That may or may not work against you in dis-enrolling.
