Army ROTC Room and Board checks

I received a 4 year AROTC Scholarship this year. I have opted to use it for room and board. I spoke with my ROO today and he said the checks wont be coming any sooner than October due to some type of "new system." Any other ROOS or cadre that can weigh in on this?

If you do use it for R & B, be sure you report the scholarship on yours or your parent's taxes as taxable income (scholarships for tuition and fees is NOT taxable income).

Concur that you shouldn't expect your check until well after the semester starts. Your school may expect your payment up front, and keep in mind that what you will receive is a $5k check, if that doesn't cover the cost you will still have a bill. Your new school/Battalion will have the best answer.

Clarkson, a question for you.

If a cadet opts to use the scholarship for room and board, do they receive the 5K check each semester regardless of what the R&B cost actually is, in other words, if the R&B costs are less then %K per semester does the cadet keep the remainder of the money or does the Army pay the actual cost up to 5K.

Also, what if the cadet lives off campus, how is the money paid, is it simply a 5K check each semester or does the cadet keep receipts for actual costs.

Both my sons went out of state so using the scholarship for tuition was by far the better option, I was just wondering how it worked for R&B.

Im not 100% sure but I believe they just flat out write you a $5000 check every semester.

MSIV DS receives R&B. In the past, Fall money was received in Dec. Yes!! that's right. After the semester. Spring came earlier like in March. Each time he receives the money directly deposited into his personal account. Not sure if the $5,000. is across the board generally for all R&B recipients , or if that is what his school sets the cost.

If I remember correctly is was a couple of months after he was sworn in. I believe he passed pft at the end of August and starting receiving it in Oct. It all depends on the HR person in the battalion.

Love it when people post "I'm not sure but..."
R&B changed to a flat rate $5k about a year ago. Flat rate, so if it costs more, so sad, and if it costs less than big win. It shouldn't take months to start stipend, so bug your HRA if you contracted and haven't seen it yet.
