AROTC decisions

@Montana State Army ROTC stated that no lists were sent out as of late Friday, so I would assume they would be sent Monday.
We were told on Friday to expect to hear something after the 4FEB21, so I wonder if they are waiting to see how many people start an application on the deadline of 4FEB21. It would certainly give CC an idea of how many applications are likely to be completed and ready for Board #3.

Don't read too much into it. There are always delays and changes in schedule- welcome to life in the military! If the packets were uploaded Friday, there would have been at least a few schools send out the famous recruiting letter to winners. Last year it was Cornell. Things should start to move Monday.

In the past, have females been awarded scholarships at a higher or lower percentage rate than their male counterparts? (Ex. 1000 males=100 scholarships, 100 females=10 scholarships???)

Also, are the odds at receiving a scholarship any higher if a student's first choice is a school that (traditionally) commissions a lot of officers (but not a SA or SMA) vs a much smaller program that doesn't produce as many officers?

I'm just curious if there is a minimum male/female ratio they strive to hit and if school of intent can be a deal breaker or not.

I don't have any data on the male vs female, but someone else may be able to provide that.

With regards to the school choice and having an impact on the scholarship - the answer is no. The award of the scholarship is 100% independent of your school choice. Once you are awarded the scholarship, CC will then assign your scholarship to 2-3 of the 7 schools you listed. Some of the schools may have reached their quota during the 2nd and 3rd Boards, so you top choices may not be available. As stated earlier in this thread, CC is very accommodating with requesting a transfer to another school.

Obviously the larger units, that commission a large number of officers, will get a higher number of scholarship slots. Think - Texas A&M is going to get more slots than Cornell.

I am sure there are goals in terms of female scholarships awarded, but I have not seen that data. Good luck.

Agree on all points. One interesting data point about UGA this year was the dramatic decline in out of state applications. My guess is that it had something to do with COVID. It will be interesting to see how the UGA numbers compare this year to last year. Go Dawgs!
On the UGA Admissions Blog, David Graves is remarkably candid and forthcoming about numbers. I'm pretty sure he said applications are up all across the spectrum; rural, non-rural, out of state. Applications from New York to UGA are up 100%.

@emmarose - those are all very relevant and valid discussion points. Bravo to you at 17 for recognizing some of the drivers that impact our military. My perspective as a 50 year old is that politicians always change, there is always and will always be somewhere that needs our military (Middle East/Iran/China...) The current social tumult is eye opening for everyone, but hopefully we, as a society, will revert back to civility and a willingness to be open minded. The COVID pandemic has most definitely thrown a monkey wrench in everyone's lives, with profound impact on your generation. This too shall pass (hopefully sooner than later). The transgender ban was relatively new and I am definitely not qualified to speak to how is could impact our military.

It will be interesting to see when this current SA/ROTC cycle is finished what the application numbers look like. I think the numbers will be close to normal with regards to the number of applicants. One of the biggest influencers that you missed is the pending release of Top Gun II. I was fortunately/unfortunately seeking admission to the USNA right when Top Gun came out. I have heard that that film was the single biggest recruiting tool for the USNA. Hopefully it will have a similar impact on your generation.

Good luck to you!
That makes a lot of sense, movies that are inspiring like Top Gun relay an effect similar to what happened after 911. Viewers get that interest and motivation to enlist like the rise after 911. My parents were worried about funding for the Military and my future with it because of the presidential election. But thank you, you’re right.

You’re wise and mature to be thinking about a potential military career in a broader context. However, your prognosis of the impact on ROTC applicants is premature if not inaccurate.

I say this because high-school students tend to not be that forward- or broad-looking about their college plans. By that, I mean that most didn’t look at the election and say, “Well, Joe Biden won so now everything changes. I’m now (not) applying.” I doubt there were many — any? — perspective candidates basing their decision to apply on who won the election and the possible implications on officer accession. And I don’t think that’ll be the case next year or the year after either.

Even if the new president made sweeping changes to military policy, it would take a while for that to trickle down to officer-accession programs — and from there, to influence the number of applicants or number of scholarships granted. The SAs, ROTC and OCS are still charged with developing a certain number of new officers each year, and that figure is part of a larger calculus that includes the nature of the mission and attrition rates — not just funding.

I also don’t see how the demographic mix would change that drastically. There’s been a movement to ensure the officer corps better reflects the military at large, and that’s good, as long as it doesn’t devolve to a quota system. Don’t see that movement changing dramatically. As for any implications on applicant rates because of the transgender policy, I believe that’s relevant to such a minuscule portion of the population that it will barely make a ripple in any numbers.
You are right that is true. I just think that diversity will be more emphasized in the Military for applicants because of Biden’s decision. But then again, what changes he wants may or may not happen because of the steps and authority required to make that decision, that did not cross my mind. I hope you are right and it is fair for everyone , it sucks that we live in a world where people are viewed so diversely because of their sex/race.

It's called active Marketing. Getting to the target audience before your competitors. Definitely frowned upon by CC.
So this is interesting...Friday afternoon DS' portal changed to the locked screen for school of intent. A couple of hours later, one of the schools on his list that he's already been admitted to reached out to him. The email was from the head of the Army detachment there. It made me wonder if schools had been notified already to some degree, which is why he was hearing from the detachment when up until now he hadn't. The only weird thing was that the email, which was pretty generic, said something along the lines of "we hope you complete your National scholarship application." That was weird since he clearly already has. But then I figured maybe CC reaches out to schools, which triggers automatic emails from the detachments, regardless of the status of the applicant's application.

I suppose we may learn more tomorrow.

All of this is interesting but I too received a few emails from schools I put on my list. From my understanding schools know if you put their ROTC battalion on their lists and are able to send you emails. This could just be an email because of the upcoming final date to start an application which is Feb 4th I believe. However what you said could be the case.

Congrats to your DD! Do you remember what time she found out? Waiting is definitely the hardest part!!
I remember last year it was all with in a few days. He was B/UC then Boarded with schools locked. Ole Miss sent him an e mail that he had won a 4 year. That night he logged on and saw the other schools he was awarded a 4 year. I even think Ole Miss was able to tell him the other schools when he reached out to them. The whole thing took about 3-4 days start to finish.

Is anyone Boarded at this point? We are still B/UC with schools locked. Just wondering if we are all the same status right now.

Not sure of the timing since things hit on a weekend - but my guess is that CC will send the lists to the schools at the beginning of this week.

Also while thinking about this. Since on the last board I don't remember CC taking the whole week to change statuses. They let everyone know by that Friday. A possible guess I have is that since they did not want to disclose who won and who didn't they changed everyone's SOI page to read only to not distinguish the ones who won and didn't (if this is the case). And they would change the SOI page back to normal for those who didnt get it this board. This is only a presumption of a scenario but we shall learn tomorrow.
