Hi All,

I have been watching the boards since the first board last year and really appreciate all of the information supplied here. I also want to congratulate all of those that were awarded scholarships!

Our situation was a little different in that we are an Air Force family (I am prior enlisted and my husband is retiring this summer) and we have boy/girl twins that both applied for AROTC scholarship. We watched the first two boards come and go with no scholarship being awarded to either child, and then by some miracle BOTH were rewarded a 3 year scholarship yesterday. Since my husband and I both served on the enlisted side, we are not sure how all of this works honestly. I saw some say that some schools might upgrade a student to a 4 year degree and also offer room and board. The school that my son has chosen did contact us and say that they offer at least 2 years free room and board, but how do we go about asking for more? Do we just contact the school and speak with financial aid about what they can offer? Both kids also received smaller academic scholarships to each of their schools and have about 5 months of the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill available to them as well.

I really appreciate any and all information.

Yup...contact the schools admissions/financial aid folks and ask. Your kids probably aren’t the first scholarship Cadets they have seen. They are in the business of making sure you come to their school and keep paying your bills (or having the Army pay the bill). And ask the ROTC Battalion too. They aren’t going to get school for free, but they aren’t going to pay a lot for a quality education and have a job waiting for them when they graduate.

We just visited Norwich university last week. When a scholarship comes their way they are very generous. Not sure where you are located but they threw in the Room and Board for all four years our daughter will be attending under an AROTC scholarship. Beautiful university. Very much worth a look. Highly suggest you look into it. They were great with numerous financial benefits.

Good luck

Thanks for the information. We are extremely grateful for anything the schools and Army can provide for them... having two in college at the same time will definitely be a challenge and our youngest will be there before we know it.

The worst thing they can say when you ask for free stuff is no. My guess is that most places wont voluntarilly offer free room and board so you need to ask. Schools are never embarassed asking for tuition money and or when they hire student to call you asking for donations. Sometimes you need to wheel and deal a little.

You can see right on the Army ROTC website which schools offer free room/board. But its a good idea to check with the school, also, since all information may not be up to date. My DD did score that free room/board along with a 4-year, so its kind of unbelievable. So, we've been able to use her college fund to help her in other ways - laptop, service trip, study abroad so far.

Thanks for the info. Regarding Norwich, did your DD have a 3 year or 4 year scholarship for them to provide the 4 year room and board?
Thanks!

was there any particular person you dealt with. I tried first time a 2 months ago before DS 3 year ROTC was identified. And they just kind of laughed at me pointing to my fasfa. So I contained myself and calmly said LIKE THAT REALLY TELLs THE REAL STORY ESPECIALLY LIVING IN NJ. As was told just fill this form out and when I looked at it I just said forget it threw it out So now I want to contact them again with the 3Year in hand As they gave DS early on about 20K per academic award as part of his initial acceptance.

I was able to answer my own question from some info about for someone. The Army ROTC site showed

Norwich University

(XXX)-XXX-XXXX
School Type : Senior Military College
This school offers the following additional incentives to students taking Army ROTC :
  • Scholarship winners receive free room and board. Student must maintain 2.75 GPA in order to retain the incentive.

You need to check if that will apply to freshman year. If not, any other financial aid your son received should still be in effect for freshman year. He would not lose this (as it pertains to tuition only) until his scholarship kicked in. Confirm all this with the bursar.

Yeah - I am assuming I'm still on the hook for 25K +- year one after his non ROTC scholarship is applied. . But I started that dialogue with a "Wink" with them today . You Don't ask you don't get

As you are newish to the forums we can't yet exchange PM's. When you can, just message me and I will respond with some info...

Hey first, congrats, I have twins also with an older child (11 months apart) so three in college at once is something I know a lot about! My oldest is an AROTC cadet, she received it on the third board two years ago. She applied to schools in two different brigades, the schools in one of the brigades all said a 3.5 year upgrade was possible, however, the school in another brigade said it wasn’t gonna happen, and hadn’t been available for years. The person to ask is the Recruiting Operations Officer, they are a civilian employee that assists the battalions with recruitment and all things to do with the scholarships, mission for number of cadets needed per year etc. If you twins have not heard from them, it is time to reach out. If the school is not a host school, the ROO might be at another school, and it might be listed on the school website who the host school is. Once you can send private messages, feel free to contact me. Some offer room and board once they are contracted mothers will do it all four years, even for a 3 year, and still others offer discounts. Some schools do not provide any additional help. Some schools will allow cadets to keep academic aid, others will not. They have a month to figure it out, and the scholarships can be transferred but not guaranteed. Good luck, I can’t imagine trying to figure out two at once. We did similar for our twins with sports recruiting and scholarships, so I do have an idea the excitement and stress involved. Keep us posted.

Thank you so much! It's nice hearing from another with multiples. We knew that this time would be stressful, but my husband is retiring the same month that they graduate and we will be moving to a new location on top of everything else, so to say that this is all overwhelming is an understatement. However, I am sure it will all work out and we are just so proud that both were accepted because in all honesty we never imagined that both would get the scholarship. I am glad to hear that there is a chance that they could be upgraded or include room and board, that will help out tremendously. I am sure I will have lot's of questions for you once I am able to send private messages. How is your daughter doing with the program? Does she enjoy it? I think it will be more challenging for my daughter than my son because she never really considered going military until this year. She will be studying Bio Chemistry.

I keep going to the Army ROTC website and searching for UNIVERSITY of Az, nothing pops up, and I’d like to research the R & B issue. Any ideas?

Call the University AROTC program directly. They'll be happy to help.
They ALL want the scholarships to come in...
Good luck!

Or try typing in Arizona instead of AZ. I found all kinds of info. Or type in University of Arizona (your favorite ROTC program here).
The FAQ page for NROTC says it's just the usual tuition, fees, books and stipend.

Was I supposed to receive an email or any sort of notification Friday from Army? I did not, and had no idea my dashboard was updated until I received an email from a school letting me know that they hoped I would accept my scholarship there (I found out minutes later upon checking my dashboard that I had in fact won a scholarship to three schools). In the past I had received emails from Army notifying me of updates to my account. Is this something I should contact them about, or did no one get any email?

Also on my dashboard there is no information on how to accept/transfer the scholarship.
