Good Morning. My son is retaking the SAT after the first board deadline in order to get his scores up.

I am sure this question has been asked several times (sorry) but should he submit his current scores and application for the first board or wait for the second board when hopefully his scores are higher?

Thanks in advance.

SAT/ACT Scores

Your SAT/ACT scores are worth 30% of your overall score. We recommend re-testing to meet the averages for recent selection statistics. Air Force ROTC does not super score the test. Strive for over a 1400 the SAT and 32 on the ACT to meet the recent increased competitiveness of the scholarship.

Currently, he is a 1200 and is applying to Army. Scheduled to take the October SAT and was wondering if he should wait to apply or apply with 1200 and then update with his new test scores? I have heard to wait until he has new scores to apply.

I have a question regarding AFROTC SAT scores. I took the SAT in August of 2022 and got a 1450 (710 Math, 740 R&W). I took the SAT again in August of 2023 and got a 1420 (740 math, 680 R&W). Knowing that AFROTC does not superscore, which SAT scores should I submit? Obviously, my 2022 score is higher but would they value a higher math score more?

The consistent advice, including from people who have sat on AROTC scholarship selection boards, is to wait until you can submit your best package, because the package only gets reviewed and graded once. I can't tell you the odds of whether he'll get his scores up, but I can tell you that 1200 is on the low side for national scholarship winners. Here's the advice I would follow:

To be competitive for an Army ROTC scholarship, strive for a 1295 on the SAT and 29 on the ACT to meet recent averages for the four year scholarship (average scores are lower for the 3 year advanced designee scholarship).

We recommend that candidates hold off on submitting their completed scholarship application until they have achieved an SAT or ACT score that makes them more competitive. For example, instead of competing on October board, wait until the January board with the opportunity to take the SAT/ACT two more times and potentially improve your score.

Adding to @franknd, it seems that relatively few scholarships are awarded in the first round. The second round round seems to be where the bulk are awarded. And it’s not unusual for 3-year scholarships to be upgraded to 4-year in the third round, once all applicants have been reviewed. Best package is better than early package when it comes to ROTC scholarships.

Not sure of AFROTC -- for NROTC DS was asked to send each test result report downloaded from CB to his local coordinator even though he had sent his two tests results to NROTC/USNA/USMA right after the testing (so it would be free of charge). In your case you can request to send the best test score unless AFROTC also asks for all the test results. My guess it is because Navy uses super score, that is why they like all the test scores.

Any idea what NROTC scores for scholarship winners

They are generally a bit higher than the scores for the Naval Academy. Check the Academy's class profile for guidance.
