DS was awarded a 4 year AROTC scholarship during the first board. He accepted it right away at his first choice school. He subsequently did not get into that school. He looked at and considered other schools on his list, but, in the end, chose to accept his appointment to USMA. Does he need to do anything or make anyone aware of not using his scholarship? He said he looked on the portal and could not see where he needed to complete any action. Does he need to decline his scholarship at this point?

He doesn't HAVE to do anything. The scholarship will be revoked when he reports to USMA.

It will be revoked if he is no show to the school he accepted it to. The preference of Cadet Command is that he declines the offer, but there is no consequence to your son with either course of action.

How does he decline? Just email cadet command?

He's already let the unit know. They were aware as he did not get into the school and they were unsuccessful in lobbying admissions to change their mind. He never did change where his scholarship was directed. It's still listed on portal at school he didn't get into.

While awaiting another reply, it would be worthwhile to call the unit and get direction from them.
Do college admissions offices work in coordination with AROTC teams to ensure admission of scholarship recipients to their schools or do they work separately? In other words, if a candidate receives a national AROTC scholarship to a designated school, does that also mean that they've been admitted to the designated college/university?

No. My daughter received her scholarship to the only school that did not admit her. She did get an email from the school cadre telling her she could try to repeal her rejection. She did not take that route as he had already decided to attend another university. She still hasn't decided if she will try to transfer the scholarship (waiting on AFROTC).

No to all the above. These are separate orocesses. That being said, at some schools the unit can exert some influence and perhaps get a borderline student through admissions. At other schools, not so much.
