Asking the experts

Just the time is what is important for now. Many young people do not wear a watch and rely on their phones to tell time. Since plebes will likely have restricted (or no) access to their phones for awhile, an accurate watch is important. Some mids like an alarm feature to insure timely wake up. Water resistant feature would be good if your Plebe plans to take part in waterfront sports after INDOC.
How long do most plebe classes lose their phones for?

Definitely no phones during INDOC except for your monitored phone calls (usually 5-
10 minutes) on Sundays. After INDOC, it completely depends on your company. It could be full phone privileges right after INDOC, or it could be only weekends for months.

I wonder if they even still have pay phones on board any more. . . . .

@cmakin, I think they're probably long gone.. here's a picture of the pay phones during that '5 minute phone call home' when my kid went through indoc 20 years ago.. They don't wear web belts or carry canteens anymore either.. I sure hope the name board from that old APL passenger ship is still around though..

We didn't wear web belts, other than the ones that kept our pants up. . . canteens? Agreed about the sign board, though. One has to wonder if it is from the passenger liner or the break bulk PRESIDENT CLEVELAND.

@cmakin How did you stay hydrated back in the 'dark ages'? maybe the cadre let you make an occasional run to a scuttlebutt for a drink? Did you guys wear those spiffy shorts and black knee socks? 🙂

That's a good point about the name board being from the C-5 PRESIDENT CLEVELAND.. either way, both were classic steamships the likes of which you'll never see again!

Hmm. . .I remember salt tablets. . . lots and lots of them. . . and yeah, hitting the scuttlebutt as we walked past. . . . and the sweat. . . sheesh. I know we had the spiffy shorts and baseball caps, but I recall the caps were khaki. . . I really can't recall if we had black socks, though. . . way too long ago.

@cmakin.. this photo from indoc taken in the mid to late 70's may help jog your memory bank.. Looks like not only the plebes but even the cadre were rocking those shorts and black knee socks.. I think I'd rather be wearing a ball cap instead of those 'high pressure' combination covers though..

Yeah, that's about right. . . after Indoc, we lost the baseball caps. I wonder if they even make the plebes brace any longer? Oh, and I don't know that we called the our leadership the cadre back then. Notice no canteens. . . .

@cmakin Didn't Kings Point call them 'pushers'? I seem to recall that's how my KP friends referred to their indoc leadership. I don't think that term is used anymore. I know it wasn't used when my son went through indoc..

Yup. Pushers. No AC, no water. . . . Plebe Beats, Plebe Outs. . . ahhh, the good old days. . . uh, maybe not.
