My family will be in Annapolis for a week in a few days...I'm wondering who has the best crab cakes now days. I know I had some pretty good ones at chick and ruth's like 20 years ago when i was there for some training.

So who has the Best and Why?

I love the crab cakes at the Severn Inn. It's just across the Severn from the academy and offers a beautiful patio with a great view of the Yard. My mid likes breakfasts there, when he gets liberty.
I imagine you could ask them to garnish it with Bacon?? ;)🥓🦀

A side of crispy bacon with crab cakes would be a welcome addition but not required...😂

Asking who makes the best crab cakes can start a real battle here! They're all good.

I am actually making crab cakes this very moment from the 20 that we caught this morning, but I am in NJ right now.

Truth be told, I have never had a single crab cake in Annapolis.
That probably violates some sort of Anne Arundel County ordinance.

A restaurant here in Annapolis can’t stay in business if they don’t offer decent crabcakes. These are in no particular order, because it’s akin to starting “best bbq” discussion. I suggest you do a comparative analysis. I am leaving many out, which others will fill in.

For the classic old-school, paper on table, bib around neck experience, buckets of soft-shell crabs, crab cakes, crab dip, buckets of cold beer, etc., here are some of the local favorite waterfront “crab deck” places in the Annapolis area and adjacent:
Cantler’s
The Point
Deep Creek Inn
Mike’s on the South River

In DTA (Downtown Annapolis):
Chick ‘n’ Ruth’s
McGarvey’s (also has a raw bar)
Middleton’s
Buddy’s Crab and Ribs

In Eastport:
Carroll’s Creek

My own favorite local gem 2 miles north of Annapolis, big fat cakes with jumbo lumps barely held together. They also have a nicely varied menu for non-crab-eaters.
Lures in Crownsville.

Hah...on our way out of DTA we went to the PO in Crownsville to mail DS his first care package. DW says she saw Lures but thought it looked low brow and was just a bait shop. Good to know it serves great cakes. Us Midwesterners can only get good cakes on the East coast.

I try to sample the crab cakes at every meal and then decide. Middletown Tavern has good ones and Pusser’s crab ball appetizer is good, but the Painkiller truly makes the pairing.

If you don't mind going closer to Baltimore, Olive Grove in Linthicum Heights makes some of the best I've ever had.

I’m allergic to crab, but I’ll throw in my $0.02 anyway. The best crab cakes are at the Amish Market. There they call them “hot fresh pretzels.” Order a dozen. They may not look or taste like traditional crab cakes, but I guarantee you’ll come back for more!

It was 30 years ago in Annapolis that I learned I’m allergic to crab, shrimp and other like shellfish. I was living in Northern Virginia and a buddy came down from Michigan for a visit. We drove up to Annapolis for a look-see. I’d heard a lot about soft-shell crabs, so put in an order. I was not impressed — disturbingly crunchy, which distracted from any good taste there might have been.

When we returned to my place, I became wretchedly ill: major stomach pain, hives all over, relentless diarrhea. I was miserable all night. Not long after, an allergist confirmed it. Shame, because the soft-shell variety aside, I grew up enjoying crab and shrimp. It’s when I learned about late-onset food allergies.
