Blue chip athlete question

If his main goal is to be an Air Force officer, and is should be if he applying to a SA, then AFROTC is a good backup plan.

As for blue chip, get something in writing from the head coach. Assistant coaches will sing you one tune, and the head coach might be out playing the field for someone better up until sometime in May. Whatever you do, always have a few backups going at the same time.

Did you ask for something in writing and did you get it?

And what back up plans do you suggest once a young man gave his word to attend the USAFA? Applications to other schools? Call to other coaches saying you might want to attend their school?

That's dishonest after giving your word to the USAFA.

I have had my own kids recruited, I have had players of mine recruited, I have had friends who have had kids recruited.

I have never heard of a SA assistant coach making an offer that was not from the head coach . I have never heard of sleazy underhanded recruiting at any SA.

And I never heard of a SA putting a verbal offer in writing. That is the job of admissions not coaches.

Coaches do announce commitments to recruiting organizations once the player verbally says yes.

. And the coach may offer a nice form letter on letter signing day that the kid can sign in school on National signing day. Its a nice photo op . It’s not the same thing kids going to civilian schools sign and is binding.

And except for one blown physical for one of my players I have never heard of kids accepting an offer from the coaches of a SA that was not then admitted to prep school or direct.

Soccer has been a huge part of his life and he wants to continue with that, but he also has a desire to serve (my husband is a Commissioned Navy Officer in the Reserves). Any of the Service Academies would be a dream come true. He was offered a spot at West Point too but had already verbally committed to AF a few days before.

He has the email from the head coach and has been in regular contact with him. I’m just an overly worried mom who needs him to have a backup plan, lol

Thank you so much. He did receive the email from the head coach about being a Blue Chip athlete. My son is truly committed to AF and it’s always been a dream of his. We are extremely proud of him. For Christmas, we all got our AF apparel, lol. Not knowing or really understanding the process is scary…especially when I’m the type of person who needs a back-up. I don’t want to project my anxiety on him and reading everyone’s responses has really helped me.

Please note I stated "Assistant coaches will sing you one tune, and the head coach might be out playing the field for someone better up until sometime in May". Also note I did not say as you stated "I have never heard of a SA assistant coach making an offer that was not from the head coach." If you want real examples please private message me your email or whatever is allowed per forum rules, and I would be glad to send redacted proof of just this practice. I won't post anything further on this string, because I really don't want to stir the pot or troll as I have been accused in previous years. I just would like for folks to get something definitive in writing or email, so their kid does not give up other options. Frankly a D1 opportunity is pretty rare, and is also rather ephemeral.

Great that you want to keep your worries and stress from him.

Five years from now you will likely look back on this as such a wonderful opportunity and experience for you son. And one of the most worrisome stressful experiences for you in your life.

Counting prep school it was five straight years of worry the first time for me. And going through a second time not much easier. Although much more informed.

I say this from experience——sadly it does not get better it only changes what you worry and stress about.

Thank you so much. I won’t talk to my son about my worries, and my husband is like…it is what it is at this point. It’s been really nice just having people to talk to about it.😁

This process has been so confusing for us and looking for advice, insight, or anything that may help. My son is recruited athlete. He was Blue Chipped, passed medical, his application is 100% complete, and we received his nomination today. His grades are pretty decent having taken AP and Honor classes. His ACT is 29 (couldn’t get him to study). Is there anything that would keep him from getting accepted now? He stopped talking to other coaches and is 100 percent committed to AF. I guess I’m just worried something will go wrong and it will be hard for him to get recruited so late in the season. Thanks for any help you can give.
If he's blue chipped, he's in. They don't throw those around for no reason.

@Jenb78 we are in the same place with our DD. She is Blue Chipped and "Signed" (not the same as civilian) on signing day in Nov, everything is in and here we wait. She stopped talking to other schools in Nov.

Has your daughter been in contact with the coach and if so, what does he/she say about the process? It just worries me that rosters are filling up and the unknown.

She has talked to the coach and was told this is just part of the process that the Coaches have little to no say in. They do have a liaison that works directly with the admissions office and works with the coaches to package the recruited athletes to admissions, from what we were told. We are trying to patiently wait, but I do feel pressure from not being able to talk to other teams. My DD is 100% committed that USAFA is where she wants to be. You are right its so scary

What has the coach told your son about the process? The wait and unknown is scary, lol.
It’s going to be a long stressful 4 or 5 years for you.

I looked into my crystal ball

Here is exactly what is going to happen. In a few weeks your son will be notified that he is being offered a direct admit or a place at the prep school.

Assuming he does nothing that will get him DQ d like a dui etc. (hey it does happen) He has all the other bases like medical covered.

Do I have any doubts at all——none.

And if the other two moms have blue chips that are ok on medical——they will get the same type of call.

And please ignore any suggestion to the contrary

Now try to relax

We were under the impression that a Blue Chip was a guaranteed spot (as long as passing medical). We assumed the coach reviewed all academics and looked over his information before offering the spot. We should have asked more questions but had no idea. My son is 💯 committed to USAFA too, but it scares me that something will not go as planned and it will be to late to make another team. Good luck to you guys.

Thank you so much for your kind and insightful response…it’s already been a long and stressful 18 years with him and still waiting for the day it gets easier, but I know it’s never going to happen, and I need to relax.lol

He has everything covered including the Senate nomination. It’s just the waiting now.

Thanks again for your response and I do hope your crystal ball is right. We already have spent a few hundred on USAFA apparel to wear to our 1st game, lol. Can’t wait!!!

My feelings on the process are that nothing is 100% when dealing with the military. However, I do believe that my son's academics were checked out before an offer was made. The coaches asked for transcripts starting at the beginning of junior year so had been following his academics as well as athletics. The formal offer was made this fall when we went on the official visit and blue chip status was given right before our visit. He did have to get waiver for a minor injury but that was a pretty easy process. He has his MOC nomination and his academics are pretty strong. I asked about a prep school slot but was told DS was given a direct admit slot. I took that to mean that the coaches had a certain number of each type. I am pretty optimistic that all will go well but waiting is difficult!
