Blue chip athlete question

My feelings on the process are that nothing is 100% when dealing with the military. However, I do believe that my son's academics were checked out before an offer was made. The coaches asked for transcripts starting at the beginning of junior year so had been following his academics as well as athletics. The formal offer was made this fall when we went on the official visit and blue chip status was given right before our visit. He did have to get waiver for a minor injury but that was a pretty easy process. He has his MOC nomination and his academics are pretty strong. I asked about a prep school slot but was told DS was given a direct admit slot. I took that to mean that the coaches had a certain number of each type. I am pretty optimistic that all will go well but waiting is difficult!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. My son is doing a Gap year in Spain and was able to do medical when he came back for Christmas. We haven’t been part of the communication process with the coach, and only get told what my son feels like sharing, lol. I will be so glad when this is over. Good luck to you guys!!

Me three! DS is blue chipped as well.
Not that it applies to my off spring anymore, but for the good of the forum, can you all provide what the blue chip process actually entailed. Discussions, documents, etc. I really don't think much has changed in 4 years, but perhaps there is better information on what is provided for this assurance of "blue chip". Above I believe one post mentioned "signed", this would be informative to find out what kind of document is signed in conjunction with the blue chip discussion. Perhaps the gap between the term blue chipped and the signing of a document is what trips up some. I know it tripped us up, since the "signing" document never materialized.

I’m not sure how everyone else’s experience has been, but for us, my son was offered a spot being a Blue Chip athlete through email. Before he was offered the spot, the coach requested all transcripts. He’s playing a Gap Year in Spain and not been able to do a visit or have a “signing”. They scheduled his medical while he was here for Christmas. He was told to go through the whole nomination process and had to meet all the requirements as everyone else, but from our understanding, the coach has a certain number of Blue Chips (8 I think for my son’s sport) that are basically highly recruited athletes and if something happens and they can’t get a nomination from a Senator they have special nominations they can get within the service academy.

I really don’t know the difference in being a recruited athlete and a Blue Chip. To me (and I could be totally wrong), a Blue Chip is someone they really want and have wiggle room in some areas. They are able to use special nominations if they are unable to get them from a Senator. I think a recruited athlete is someone they want and if they pass admissions, they will have a spot on the team, but they don’t have the wiggle room to help in the process. That’s just my thought and I could be totally wrong.

Jenb, I am not sure if this USAFA recruiting question is what got the person you are responding to their 6 month ban or not.

But they have been posting and complaining about this very issue for 4 long years. The very first thread they started was on this USAFA sports recruiting issue..

Now they are asking , 3 worried and upset moms, who came here admitting they don’t understand the process, and want to be reassured, to explain the process to them. :)

You are being played

If you want to relax , just ignore them , and wait and come back and regal them with the positive news I know you will get in a few weeks time.,

Thank you so much. I truly appreciate your knowledge and insight.

I’m not upset at all…just worried and hate waiting, lol. I just wish I had a crystal ball, but I’m going to try my best to trust yours.😁

Thanks again.

To the person who wants the exact process, I imagine the process is different for each sport and for each athlete. I also feel that it is no one else's business. The D1 recruiting process as a whole can be daunting and some coaches (not at USAFA) make promises they don't keep. USAFA has been very upfront and honest throughout the process and I am super excited for my DS to have the opportunity to continue his athletic career as well as serve his country. This is his dream come true and he has worked exceedingly hard for it. If for some unforeseen reason things do not work out as planned another opportunity will present itself. Best of luck to the other two moms on here and feel free to message me.

The one thing folks need to keep in mind about SAs, D-1 SAs, is that they are recruiting against other SAs and the Big 10, the SEC, the PAC……

The coaches have to be upfront and honest and be able to deliver.

Because if they make actual promises and actual offers from the coaching staff, and they can’t follow thru on , their days as a D1 coach will be shortly over at a SA.

Because absolutely ever school including other SAs, maybe especially other SAs, will use this type of failure as a reason to not trust that school or coach.

Thousands are recruited , many of them are made offers——offers that are accepted by 100s each year—-and the system works.

I can definitely confirm and agree with your statement "Because if they make actual promises and actual offers from the coaching staff, and they can’t follow thru on , their days as a D1 coach will be shortly over at a SA."

The assistant coach that, and I quote from his official USAFA email correspondence (November), "We did blue chip your application so you will be considered a recruited athlete." was no longer at USAFA the following year.

Has anyone gotten any indication from coaches regarding their application status? Do coaches find out before applicants are notified?

I can tell you from DD experience last year her coach knew exactly when her application was being reviewed and when she was receiving an appointment. DD stayed in touch with coach throughout the process and he was the one that notified her before the appointment showed up in the portal about a week later.

That being said, I'm sure things are working a little differently this year with the new admissions system.

The coach told my son his application was pushed through last week, and they hoped to know the results last week. The coach texted him Friday and said he got a message from the admissions liaison saying they were still waiting for the vote and it would be next week before he hears anything. The wait is horrible, lol

Relax

The varsity coaches at a (D1) SA recruit “pretty much” like any other D1 university. With a few extra hoops for the student to worry about Like a physical.

100 s are recruited to a SA like this every year. The process works

Normally assuming physical etc the absolute worst that happens if your S or D slips with grades or test score badly enough——prep school, for a year. I am a big fan of those red shirt prep schools .

You have that golden ticket .

You won’t relax——BTDT 2 x now——but you can relax way more than other parents.

Coaches of any SA that made these kind of offers where kids do in fact stop their other schools from recruiting them would soon be out of a job if they found they could not get their recruits admitted direct or prep school after making such offers as has been made to yours..

They would be fired because they would not be able to recruit in the future,

Don't trust these coaches would be known and used by the other SAs and other universities and all the other recruits.

Like any other university the coaches have to be able to recruit. And they have to be able to be trusted when they make an offer.

.
You were right. The coach called my son earlier and said he received his appointment. Thanks so much for trying to calm my nerves, lol
