Boots

I am not certain if the Oakley boots were permitted for Beast. My son is a 2025 cadet. He took a pair of Garmont's with him to Beast. He used Oakley's during his JROTC time in high school. He asked us to bring his Oakley's to him once the academic year started. But he did say that he thought the Garmonts held up better than the Oakley's would have during Beast. He mainly uses the Oakley's for road marching, but he prefers the Garmonts when he is in the field for extended periods of training.

DS is a plebe on his second pair of Garmonts. He says they are great and much better than the issue pair they also get. Between Beast, Sandhurst, and all else h just wanted another pair.

Whew...I saw the title of the thread and instantly had a flashback moment to SERE...

Just curious, do you wear different boots during winter in USMA or it's the same boots that you wear for summer field training?

Does West Point send a notification to candidates offered admission about the Boots?

It comes in an Admissible Packet through your portal, which stated that any boots will work as long as they are compliant with AR-670-1 and some other requirements. I do not know if they are visible to those who have not accepted admission, however.

The admissible packet appeared after E-QIP and fingerprint were green. You need to complete the other steps first.

I didn't have either completed and they were released for me. It might be released for everyone who accepted their appointment because the letters state they are to "prepare for entrance into West Point".

My son is a current plebe.
One of our friends took him to an Army base where he tried on various boots.
He bought Garmont T8 NFS 670 boots, and there are still going great.
I agree that it is really helpful to go try them on, if you have that opportunity.

As for low quarters, I got the high gloss ones, but I think that may be the wrong one. Can anyone confirm?

These are the three options:

a. Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support (DLATS) Men’s Military Black Leather Oxford Dress Shoe, non-shiny; AAFES item #2396992 or Cadet Store item #E000968.

b. Men’s Bates Lites Black Leather Oxford, non-shiny; https://www.batesfootwear.com, Bates item #932 (Not available at the USMA AAFES). MACC SUBJECT: Authorized Footwear for Class of 2026 2

c. (Women Only) Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support (DLATS) Women’s Military Black Leather Oxford Dress Shoe, non-shiny; AAFES item #2174731 or Cadet Store item #E000769.

Didn't see an answer to this question you posed. The short answer is generally no. There are boots that are better suited for cold weather environments. You might come to discover these once you are in the Army. But at West Point, you will just wear what you have.

Not to date myself, but during my time at West Point and in the Army, jungle boots were common along with the standard issue leather boots. I never wore anything other than jungle boots (with the exception of jump boots when appropriate), whether in summer or winter, because they were lighter and dried much faster. I never had a pair of "winter" boots.

You’ll need the ones as listed above you’ll have to shine yourself. It’s part of the experience. As a yearling, you can wear the glossy ones

Are there brands of boots that are for narrow feet? My DS has narrow feet and usually for running shoes only fits Nike and Mizuno. Wondering about boots. Also, do people tend to wear compression socks with their boots? Thanks,

Update- I received the Garmont T8 Bifida boots and they fit great especially with the fox river socks. Thanks everyone for the recommendations!

Does it seem like you need to break it in much? Or do they feel good right off the box? We're waiting for DS' order to be mailed to us.

The low quarters, we got DLATS, are very heavy and stiff - seems to need a longer break-in time.

I don't really feel the need to break them in too much. I think going on regular training walks leading up to BEAST will be all you need to break them in.

I also recently received the Garmont-- I'm getting fox river socks soon but for me the larger metal part digs into my ankles sometimes. I guess I have to figure that out
