I have recently been sponsored by my American Legion post to attend boys state. It has come to my understanding that there are many different positions available at boys state. I was wondering how much weight boys state holds on the application for USMA and which government positions I should strive for while I am there. My next question is, does being an honor graduate stand out more?

They ask whether you went to Boys State and whether you went to Boys Nation. Might ask if you were a governor. But that's all.

My son was only asked if he attended Boys State as part of the USMA application. I imagine the question about positions could be asked during MOC interviews.

In my opinion, Boys State looks amazing, especially if you hold an officer position. I was my state's (NC) State Auditor last year, and besides me receiving an appointment, it was an insightful experience. Plus, when I went to the Founder's Day this year, 3 other guys that attended Boys State had also received an appointment. So, I'd say Boys State (even more so for Boys Nation) looks great on any application.

Boy State was HUGE for DS. He earned many positions along the way which looked great in his resume, but the biggest benefit was being able to say yes when asked if he attended . It definitely was impactful for him.

They do ask about specific elected positions in Boys State as well but it was only 2 or 3- I think a rep or senate. Great program and great for the application too

While it is an honor to be selected for Boy’s/Girl’s State, I have no idea how it gained so much weight in the admissions process- it’s basically weighed as much as being an Eagle Scout.

Yes it will. By how much? just another officer position tick on the Portal App. Go for it. But kids don’t like it if they see try hard to get the role to help get one to Boys Girls Nation. But respect the genuine leadership to help their County. Boys Girls State is must go if you’re picked and sponsored. Beyond Academies, it’s an honor you will keep for the rest of your life and stays in your resume like Eagle Scout although I wouldn’t put the same weight as Eagle Scout.

You can often read when a VIP is mentioned and he is an Eagle Scout and Boys State graduate, these two are always mentioned together, ie Neil Armstrong.

You may not "put the same weight as Eagle Scout" on Boys/Girls State but according to what DS was told by his RC W.P. Admissions does.

They do, though I disagree with this very strongly. I’ve even had people I know who have been selected say there is no comparison between the two.

I do not disagree with you. One takes years to achieve and the other is about 7 days. Just pointing out that USMA does not seem to distinguish one from the other in their point system.
