Branching, OML, OMS

Our PMS is putting it closer to the 77-78 ballpark. It's probably all just speculation until the actual number comes out. It sucks having to wait until November.

My cadre told me that 80 was what CC was telling them in the summer. That number could totally change.

I wish they would have told us our component earlier so for those who were below the AD cutoff have time to plan for plan B. Although we should be planning for plan B regardless. But it's still nice to know.

Huh. My score was a little higher than that and I was told not to worry at all about being above the AD cutoff.

I agree wih you on the timing for the release of component selections. I graduate in December. It really isn't enough time to prepare.

Yeah, I'm also a DEC graduate. I am going to try to find a USAR unit just in case. I really don't see the cut off line getting anywhere near 80.

It just depends on how many people volunteer guard/reserves that have high OMS and how much the army wants to take. From the brief at LDAC, from what I remember, it's around 3500.

It could very well shift a decent amount. There was a LT I know who got AD only because of the NG/reserve cadets taken out of the OML. The ironic thing is when he commissioned he started speaking badly about the competence of the reserve component even though the only reason he was on AD was because of those said LTs who went GFRD or just opted out of AD for whatever reason.

Boy did I lay into him.

It's good to have a plan B with the USAR so you can at least get the branch you want because the popular branches get filled fast just like AD.

For all those who have scores in the mid 70s, I would highly advise having a plan B. there has been a significant OML inflation this year due to factors like land nav being easier at LDAC. I'm not saying you won't get AD, but if you're anywhere in the 70s it would be smart to think about what you will do if you find yourself in the NG or USAR.

Well, the packets are supposed to be finalized in a week and the selection board doesn't convene for another month according to the slide deck. Maybe it will dawn on CC that waiting to release the cutoff until the month before December graduates finish up is a crappy idea.

Is this year group smaller than last year?

Found out today I got a OMS score of 79.something. Does Anyone have FY 13 OML results on them? I think last years number was 75-76. I don't know if the AD cutoff will be a lot higher (80 or more) cause if I'm not mistaken, the number of AD LT slots are not that much lower this year compared to FY 13. Anyone have any info on how many AD slots are offered this year compared to last year?

Who knows how the scores will adjust now that the system has changed. The cutoff for last year being thrown around online was a 75.15. What did your cadre tell you to expect?

They said they think I will barely scrape by, as in being in the bottom of oml. However they said that it is hard to predict numbers cause of the major changes. They basically said it could be high 70s to mid eighties .

There you go. I doubt you'll find out anything different here or research anything different anywhere. Just have plan A and B in place and hang tough. Good luck. Hope your dreams come true! :thumb:

I would start looking at Plan B

What do you want to branch (for USAR/NG purposes)?
What did you major in?
Any internships?

I'm already looking at a plan b . I'm majoring in a technical degree so I put in an Adso for the special branch program . But incase that didn't workout I would like to branch usar in the mi branch . Already talked to usar , and there seems to be several openings in the surrounding areas .

Plan B: Plant seeds of doubt about active duty life in higher performing Cadets and encourage them to branch Reserve.

I think there's a lot of ambiguity this year. I did marginally higher than you and was told I was golden for AD and that the gray area would be around 75-78. Your cadre is saying as high as into the 80s. Doesn't seem to be much uniformity in counselings.

hahaha that's a good idea. When I was at LDAC a lot of people in my platoon wanted to go reserves/NG (about 50%). Even cadet's from VMI and the Citadel were opting to not go active. It's shocking to hear that the cutoff could go to 80 or more, like some people are speculating. I was looking at past accessions, and the largest OMS jump score seemed to be from 72 (FY 12) to 75.15 for the most recent FY cohort (FY 13, though I'm not sure cause this number is based of online posts, I can't seem to find the FY 13 accessions results anywhere). I'm curious how many less AD slots are available compared to last year?

There are a lot of things pulling at the cutoff number besides the number of AD slots available (which so far is unknown). Things that come to mind:
1) As mentioned above, the number (and OMS's) of cadets choosing guard/reserve can remove a large number of cadets from "above the line". An improving economy may lure some to the improving offers from the private sector. This could lower the line.
2) We are winding down operations overseas. And many of today's cadets signed up for ROTC in a time when they thought they would see action. Now that the "peace time" (if that will ever exist again) Army is coming into view, perhaps the lure is gone? Put in your reserve time and move on?
3) These new programs for STEM majors may siphon off to candidates who may have been "below the line", raising the level of the line.
4) There seem to be more points available than before (points for STEM major, etc) that boost the over all scores, raising the line.
5) And cadets have become more sophisticated in taking on more activities to check more accessions boxes over time because they now have a better understanding of how accessions work.

So many things at work... So little information... How is the cadre able to give good advice except to prepare for all scenarios?

Not waiting until four weeks before I graduate to tell me if I have to find a full time job would be a decent start.

My major isn't an issue. I have a family. The more time I have to prepare them for the next step, the better. While it might not be such a big deal for the majority of Cadets, it has more weight for old farts like me.
