C/O '26 parents - place to commiserate and share. Roller coaster for the next 3 years!

Got my permanent DBIDS card a few weeks ago, so I'm good to go on the Yard anytime now. (Could do that with the paper one as well, but at least now we have something smaller that can go into the wallet). When my parents go on, they are retirees with DoD ID, so they are good as well. Dude's GF? She's gotta park outside and walk in through Visitor gate. :p

Remember driving on as a teenager in one of the parent's cars back when you had the sticker to allow access. 17 year old kid getting saluted because of the blue officer sticker. A few years later I borrowed a car to go on while on leave, and they saluted the full bird on the car, saw me, put the hand down and asked for my ID. :p

... ok during Plebe year we stayed at the Navy Lodging on three occasions next to the Chapel and Herndon. When we told DS that we're in the yard, he said they were not allowed to see the parents. So I suggested take a walk during your break and "nonchalantly" make a detour to Lodging. He stayed for dinner and then took the leftovers to his roommates.

What year was this?

Kid texted me from their layover in AZ. Should be in San Diego soon. Also said the first batch of kids got hosed with their flight, and had to practice extreme semper gumby for their trip.

Said they believe they are cutting the SWO part of their's to fit in the 3 weeks instead of 4.

... so don't know which is more "fun" Norfolk or San Diego. With DS Virginia Beach was the ultimate summer break... then he discovered Upper East Side, NY with all the restaurants, game shops, book stores, bagels, and trade shops.

In-n-Out Burger!
Lol my son stopped at an in-n-out on way to california and tried it. We have never had it.

He loved it. Said it was better than 5 guys (whenever I brought my kids I watched them eat - I don’t like 5 guys).

Last visit to Annapolis, we went to 5 Guys... Overated like Miami Beach.

Five Guys: When I lived in DC (Arlington, technically, just up the road from the Pentagon) I was walking distance from the original Five Guys. About as hole-in-the-wall as you can get. Future DW and I used to order takeout — there was really nowhere to sit inside — and by the time we got back to my place, there were dark spots on the brown paper bag. It was sooo good!

In-N-Out: I used to despise the idea, since it was a SoCal institution and I’m a NorCal native. Then they started opening stores up north, including one near my childhood home. Mom was a fan, so whenever we visited, we’d take her there. It grew on me. Now I try to get some whenever I visit DS at college out there.

My ideal combo: In-N-Out’s burgers and Five Guys’ fries.

But if I want it all from one place? Shake Shack, hands down! Used to hear my NY friends go on and on about it. Couple days before DD’s I-Day, we tried the one in DC, before a Nationals game. That place is for real!

For any parents visiting kids at West Point and having the traverse the hellhole that is the Jersey Turnpike, on the way back down south, there are Shake Shacks in a couple of the service areas!
