Candidate Visit: USNA

"Bothersome" is not the right word. She has never seen how incredible it is, and seeing it could be the deciding factor. With most of these kids, USNA has competition.
Why is DD interested in USNA ? I If getting invited (or not) for a visit is a deciding factor, is serving as a Naval Officer her true objective ? There are a lot of great schools out there, but there is only one dedicated to developing Naval Officers.

Yes, visiting USNA for the first time can be a wonderful experience, but let's face it.....access is likely to be limited between now and May 1, and Candidates may have to make the decision without the benefit of a visit. It may seem strange -- but it wasn't all that long ago that Candidates reported to USNA sight unseen, with only a print college catalogue. (I was already committed and attending NAPS before I saw USNA, and I had a lot of Classmates who saw it the first time on I day). Nowadays, there are all sorts of online resources, YOUTUBE videos, Admissions briefings, etc. If someone is dedicated to attending USNA, there is plenty of information.

Right now, focus is on getting CVW for those with offers (no mention of LOA's), and we have been told not to make referrals. The number of available slots is limited (and will decrease as the current ROM continues; frankly I have my doubts whether they will happen at all). Pure speculation on my part, but I would expected that whatever spots are available are being targeted to improve underrepresented areas. (As I have said about NASS -- the kid who grew up in NorVA/MD , attending USNA football games and visiting the Yard, and has wanted to go to USNA since he was 5, is not the target audience).

Exactly. I suspect these are very targeted invites. I know our state only has one accepted offer at this point. And it’s not up to BGOS as far as who they can request a CVW for, as in past years.

I misunderstood, thinking his DD was trying to decide between SA’s. Spot on about her ‘why’. If it’s serving as an Officer in the military? A visit would be nice, but not a requirement. As the driving force should be serving. Not the campus accommodations.

With the explosion of covid cases on the yard, in person visits are very unlikely to happen. The angst in this thread is much ado about nothing.
Explosion is an understatement! It is WILD right now there!!! I would be very surprised if these happen at all. You either want in or not - a visit shouldn't be the deciding factor.

I understand the feelings of those who say a visit shouldn't be a deciding factor, but my DS is another who wants to see the Yard (he was admitted to Summer Seminar and COVID claimed that - he needs the visual to check it off in his mind), so we're going cross country on a plane to visit those campuses on his shortlist that he can't easily visit. If he gets an invite after that, we'll figure out how to get him there and if there isn't an opportunity - at least we got him to experience the surroundings as best we could.

Under the current circumstances, the best view of the yard you are likely to get will be from a boat.

I am very empathetic to this situation. If it brings you any peace, generations of mids have attended site unseen. My grandfather saw the yard for the first time on I Day as did the majority of his classmates (‘39). My father had seen pictures but hadn’t toured (‘68). While Covid has claimed much, candidates have so much access via internet that midshipmen candidates for the last 160 years have not had.

While the campus may speak to some, it is the career path that really should steer the ship to port.
Safe travels.

I understand the posts saying that are saying these visits aren’t going to happen, this thread is much ado about nothing, or doesn’t matter the yard will be closed, but these are all current outgoing invites that are continuing to be sent out every day now. I know of one that just got the mail mail invite this afternoon. Seems that USNA would just stop the invites and put them on hold of there was no chance of this happening at all rather than have families book hotel rooms, flights, rental cars, etc. Maybe there’s a plan in place for them to make this happen. It definitely seems like an on going goal that has not been put aside as of today.

This is called aspirational strategic planning. They plan it, have it ready to go, but there will also be contingency plans. They will do it if they can, keeping the USNA mission and health and safety the primary factors.

No one is saying the WONT happen. And those (🙋‍♀️) that are GUESSING they won’t, are speaking from their intimate knowledge of things going on presently on the Yard (their Mid(s) stuck in hard ROM with no end in site, BGO’s who received updates, Mids themselves, people who ‘know people).

As with everything here on the forums, admissions is the one that matters, and they aren’t here (other than DODMERB Mullen). Everything here is opinion regarding USNA admissions.

Of course they have to plan for it to happen. And I sure hope it does! But opinions here are addressing that the spots are very, very, very limited. To help people understand that receiving an invite isn’t a reflection of their own competitiveness, or that USNA’s desire to have them attend. Additional opinions are trying to help, by suggesting to make things cancellable. In case the visits don’t occur.

And the *recent* announcement that VAX begins TOMORROW (waahooo) may be a game changer in these visits.

Semper Gumby. Always.

Oh yes. That all makes perfect sense and I believe is understandable to everyone.
I hope that most people have figured out to have a plan A, B, and C together and ready by now in the whole academy application process.

@justdoit19 summed it up perfectly. Those of us with mids have learned to live by Semper Gumby in the best of times. These are not the best of times.

(Little known fact: Semper Gumby is rooted in the Latin words Southwest Airlines. True...you can look it up!)
