Checklist before BCT

are you saying he got to wear it during basic? from what i understood we're not allowed to have a watch during basic

Hi AFA, sorry for the late response, but you started me thinking...so I had to look through the webguy photos. He has his watch in a few pictures, but not the majority of pictures. So, maybe it was squadron dependent, activity dependent, or day of the week dependent? I do know that it was important to him after BCT, since he wasn't allowed to carry his cell phone. He did have it with him in I-Day.

sunblock & when to bring cleats?

Cleats...To keep the bag as light as possible I thought I would just bring to my DS on Parent's Weekend. Does anyone know if he will need them before that?

Sunscreen...On another thread, I was told to bring sunscreen but it's not on any list. Plan to just pack it and see what happens.

didnt see it on any forms or i might have missed it - do we need passport sized pictures??

is everyone bringing cleats?

when is the first time one gets to shop for basic necessities at the store??

sunblock will be provided? ive seen yes and nos on the forums. do we need to put that on on I day?

(Originally posted to the USAFA 2017 FB group. Given how close the dates are now, it's a tad late in the coming, but it's still useful)

Since this question is popping up regularly, quick checklist for all the lovely paperwork we have to do, when it's due, and what to do with it on I-Day.

* = Denotes paperwork that MUST have copies brought on I-Day. Having a copy of everything doesn't hurt, though.

* June 1st - Optometry order form (only if you need glasses for BCT); fax or email
* June 1st - Immunizations form; fax or email (keep a personal copy, as well)
June 3rd - Association of Graduates membership application (*if you choose allocated payment, bring the form)
June 7 - Sponsor Program preferences and information; mail, email, or fax
June 10th - Tattoo and Body Marks Form 4428, must be completed with an ALO; fax or email.
June 10th - Uniform Measurements; mail, email, or fax.
* June 11 - O-123 Emergency Medical Information - DO NOT SIGN; mail the original form and bring a copy.
* June 11 - SGLV 8286 Life Insurance - DO NOT SIGN; mail the original form and bring a copy.

??? Banking Agreement and Information - Sent these in and lost the instruction forms, so I don't have the deadlines for them (if you have them, post in comments). Must be mailed.

===========================

Other stuff:
* SF86 Security Clearance: You don't have to turn this in, just bring it completed to I-Day. According to information given by graduates and current cadets, you will be redoing the form using the information you're filling in now. Don't show up on I-Day and get screwed over because you can't remember your teacher's home phone number.

* Bring three copies of your travel orders to I-Day.

* If you're traveling on your own dime, bring travel voucher form, itinerary, and receipts

The General Questionnaire, Privacy Release, and Language Placement Test are due before I-Day, and are accessible through the email sent to you (Appointee Data Collection).

===========================

Useful Notes:
If you don't submit your immunization form by June 1st, don't panic - you'll just have to get them again during inprocessing (sorry, trypanophobes). Same goes for most of the other forms - for most of them, failure to submit by the deadline isn't an insta-fail state, but will complicate things for you. That said, GET IT DONE ON TIME.

For those wondering about the 7:00 AM arrival time on June 27th (in relation to squadron assignments), we'll be getting detailed arrival orders on June 12th (6:45, 7:15, 7:45...). If you're hoping to get a certain squadron for BCT, you'll know on the 12th.

Stay classy, 2017, and get 'yer dang paperwork done!

How can I join that group? I tried searching for it but couldn't find it.

cleats

Cleats...To keep the bag as light as possible I thought I would just bring to my DS on Parent's Weekend. Does anyone know if he will need them before that?

There was an email a month or so ago from USAFA that stated the importance of having molded cleats during BCT. They said the grass is wet in the morning and it sometimes rains in the afternoon so the grass might be wet in the afternoon too. Apparently, they had several cadets get serious injuries over the past few summers that they felt could have been avoided by having cleats. hope that helps

Sunscreen...On another thread, I was told to bring sunscreen but it's not on any list. Plan to just pack it and see what happens.
small bottle or face stick should be fine to start off with

I just wanted to throw in my two cents on cleats. The only time you will use them is intramurals if you play a sport that uses them. I would say it isn't worth the extra weight and effort and I certainly wouldn't buy them just for basic. Only 2 people in my basic flight had cleats and they were both IC soccer players.

I have some cash set aside for i-day like people have suggested but I'm trying to think if I need to get anything else that's not listed... I already have a watch for after bct and boots for after recognition or whenever we're allowed to have them. But are there any other purchases (major or not) people should make before going to bct if that makes any sense?

Cleats

Hi
While I understand that cleats is optional, I am sending them as an added safety feature. The last thing I need is for my IC DS to slip and get injured during BCT. If a cheap set of molded cleats (as recommended) provide some extra safety, I will thank it money well spent.

Has anybody else been having trouble sending the immunization forms to the email? I made sure to use the .mil ending at the bottom of the page, but I keep getting the message that the email can't be accepted because the mailbox is full. When I tried to call I was told the whole office is shut down for the day. I guess I'll have to try Monday and hope they don't turn me into a pincushion on I-Day.

That's the address I have been using. I keep getting this bounced back at me:

"Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups:

10mdg.sgoma@us.af.mil
The recipient's mailbox is full and can't accept messages now. Please try resending this message later, or contact the recipient directly."

Just so you know, that email address didn't work in 2010 or 2012. Use the fax number provided. Make sure you have a copy on your person (ie: in a wallet or pocket), make sure you have another copy you can turn in. Think this through logically and you will be fine. The immunization clinic deals with all cadets and not just the incoming group. As with all your other paperwork that you have mailed, faxed or gotten to the Academy one way or another, make sure you have another copy with you on I-Day, just in case. It just makes sense, the longer you are in the military you will find out that keeping a copy of ALL paperwork or a digital copy is in your best interest. I worked USAF Reserve Personnel for 10 years, can't tell you how many times things got lost "accidentally". The people who survive are the ones who have back-ups. Make a file and put everything in it. My husband, who spent 23 yrs in service and retired more than 20 yrs ago still has almost all of his paperwork, believe me there is a lot of it because everything was on paper then, digital copies were not an option.

Fax it. I had the same issue and had better luck with the fax.

I tried faxing it, but the fax did not go through...
I didn't receive a bounce-back from that email address for some reason though.
If all else fails, will having copies of our immunization records on I-day be enough to keep us from having to re-do our shots?

i read that having external monitors, no bigger than 24 inches, is up to the wing commander. does that mean its best to wait until closer to acceptance day to order an external monitor? or would it be like boots where it's dependent upon the squadron you're in and might not be allowed until after recognition

It is very squadron dependent. You should know by Parent's Weekend if it will be allowed. It is also an ideal time to get a printer if you don't have one already. DD shared her printer early on her freshman year with her two roommates, until the got theirs PW. If you have family coming for A-Day that is also a good time to get a printer, or have them bring you one. You won't be able to leave campus on A-Day, but they do carry them at the C-Store though.

Having a printer at the start of the Academic year paid off big time.

The email provided for immunization a consistently gave me an error after trying all day to send the forms. The fax number rang for hours, so that didn't work as well. How am I supposed to get the forms in ASAP? There was no possible mailing address, so I'm very confused.

Hi
Call Crista Hill, (USAFA Counselor) she is the best and will help you through the problem or give you a better fax number.
