lets state the obvious; the first choice of most young people seeking a military career are the FSAs, and in most cases its simply because they are free. DODs own surveys show that only 15% of those attending the FSAs do so because they want a military career; its the lure of a free education, guaranteed job and better prospects for civilian employment after the military. I say this not to bash the FSAs because they are outstanding schools but its just the reality. The Citadel and VMI have long been seen as "the next best thing to the service academies" because of the fact that they are very similar in structure and also offer more commissioning opportunities; and it is true that some students actually turn down acceptance to an FSA in order to go to either VMI or The Citadel for various reasons, one being the flexibility of being able to decide whether or not to commission into the military as well as the option of being able to join any of the 5 military services. And of course there is the small matter of competition to get into the FSAs, with acceptance rates of about 9% you best have a backup plan or two in place just as you would if applying to any other prestigious college like Yale, Duke or Stanford. And I believe NAS fudges on the truth yet again, posted acceptance rate for VMI ranges from 49-56%
