Class of 2016-Mailbox Stalkers Club

No more stalking

DS got the MOC call last Saturday and, like others, portal indicated appt offered Wednesday. Based on what we were reading here we thought the BFE may come today and it did! Thanks so much to everyone for your encouragement, advice and comaraderie. This forum has helped prepare our son both as a candidate and now as an appointee. As Pima often reminds us, it is just the beginning. And we're praying with each of you for your beginning, wherever it takes you!

The USAFA Admissions page on Facebook says the second week of April. I think I prefer to call it the SEOD (small envelope of doom) now though, like Triple mentioned.

Do you know when the Prep School notifications come?

As each day passes, my hope falls a little bit more.

I'm trying to keep hope like everyone keeps telling me, but it gets harder to find that hope every day. I'll keep trying though.

The Air Force Academy isn't "life", the quicker you accept that you are not going, the more you can enjoy your other college options. In the event you do get a call for DA or prep school, you can be presently surprised. I've applied to four colleges and got denied from all but one(including AFROTC scholarship), Embry Riddle AU. Instead I'm am enjoying the prospect of playing basketball there and still participating in AFROTC. In the beginning of my senior year I made the mistake of not enjoying my Plan B and it ruined my year. I'm not making that mistake in college or in my future military career. Sulk quickly, then move on. Life doesn't stop, neither should we.

The doolies are required to memorize a ton of minutia. Most of it they want to immediately forget. But one of them is the poem "Invictus" by William Ernst Henley. Some cadets are so moved by this poem after recognition that they had it tattooed on themselves (within regs):

"Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul."

The last two lines of the poem says it all. While nothing is yet settled, once it is, and if it is adverse - what you do from that point on will come to define you.

Wow! I will be sharing this with my DS. Thank you for sharing.

One of my favorite poems!

Those last two lines send chills down my spine for some reason... I like it.

You cannot control what happens to you. What you CAN control, is how you react to what happens to you. If you want to take control of your life, then make sure you choose wisely how you react to every circumstance. It is always a choice you make, consciously or unconsciously.

Too funny......my kids grew up hearing this. It has been our household motto. :shake:

Yes, mom and dad were big time Star Wars fans and "forced" it on the "younglings".

But, actually they loved SW just as much as we did (huh, do). They had light sabers when they were little and acted the parts, even dressed up like Darth, Annakin and Padme' for Halloween. (My DS has a younger brother and sister) Anyone else have memories like this?

May not be advice but if anyone wants to join with me, I'm considering enlisting in the Air Force if not accepted to the AFA.

Still possible to 'serve' while apply at the same time

First off, good on you for wanting to serve.

Second, the minute you step off that bus in Lackland AFB, they own you. Don't go in with any preconceived notions either- you will get less than 30 seconds to eat dinner some days, and you aren't guaranteed the standard 9pm to 4:45am sleep schedule. I once had EC (entry control) duties from 9pm to 11pm, and then had to wake up at 2am to help with a baby flight when I was a few days from BMT graduation.

But that only lasts 8.5 weeks. It's really not that bad looking back.

Don't assume that enlisting is a sure way to get into the AFA. Hopefully you have a cool commander if you decide to enlist.

He's completely right. The standards may be lower as far as scores go as an enlistee but you have to work your ass off to earn a rec from your commander. Which probably won't be a problem for you if you've made it this far in the application process. Best of luck!

A few things about this. You need to be very careful with your goals and intentions. Remember that when you enlist the AF will put you where they need you and might not let you apply to the AFA.

In my experience, most commander's are supportive of their troops applying but if your personal ambitions or goals cloud your judgement or influences the mission then you will be shot down in a heart beat. The AF relies on the commander to screen prospective applicants. They essentially take the place of the MOC. If you acquire disciplinary paperwork for some stupid decisions during tech school then you may not gain your leadership's support and your application would stall quickly.

Why did you put the word 'serve' in quotations?

EDIT:// Haha, one hint of enlisting and all the enlisted folks jump in.

Yes, but you guys perspective on this is invaluable to help give a realistic look at things.
I hope every one of you enlisted guys on here get in. Good luck!
