I would wait until the official appointment notifications for the Class of 2023 commence (~10 months from now). While the members of the NAPS Class of 2019 have a reasonable opportunity to become members of the USNA Class of 2023, it would probably be premature to "book it" at this point in time. IMHO...

Since this is the Class of 2022 USNA appointment thread, mixing in a NAPS offer muddies the waters a bit if the purpose is tracking the SA appointments for this class.

You could start a NAPS appointment thread for your year in the interim - definitely something to celebrate. We could all cheer when we see your name appear in the spring of 2019, when the NAPSter appointments start to pop up for USNA Class of 2023.

2019: 85 Reported with 16 Reporting as having LOA (20%) and by this date, 30 out of 85 had reported (35%)

If this data can be considered representative... that would mean the LOA percentages the past few years have consistently increased!! IT is repeatedly said that LOAs are rare - and are obviously NOT the goal. It would also mean - if this data can be extrapolated - that we are running a bit behind the past two years on reporting, but - once again IF this data is representative - we should be somewhere around 35% to 45% percent through the appointment release. The other 60% will be releasing in February and March.

Now for my Big Question.... Do you BGOs and Moderators feel that this data is representative - or is there a potential bias that those with LOAs are more involved in this forum thatn other candidates? Are they more likely to report? Or is there an increasing trend in the use of LOAs by Navy?

As I recall, less than 15% of all appointees post their status in the SAC appointment threads each year. With a sampling size this small and without validation that this self-reported information is representative of the general appointee population, I would be hesitant to put much faith in the trend analysis derived from this data. IMHO.

That’s the interesting thing. I’m a statistician by trade - and when I look at some of the other distributions it doesn’t look biased. Geographically for example - when I run the 2021 numbers against the MOC count and populations by state - they are reasonably close. When I look at DS / DD numbers (where known) they are close. When I look at the number of Presidential and Special nominating categories they aren’t far off what the actuals should be.

Self reporting isn’t naturally biased if you get a large enough sample size. Our sample size is >100 so statistically significant. And it’s roughly 10% if the population. Of all the measures that look off - it only seems to be LOA%. So the question becomes - is that the only bias - the the LOA distribution within the other factors is simply proportional?

I must say, as an avid STEM student, that I have made spreadsheets and looked at numbers from years past to predict some aspects of this year. However, NAVYCAPT93 takes it to a whole new level. Thank you.

For many of those receiving their confirmed appointment, how are you being contacted? My daughter was wondering if it will be a phone call, an email, or if her portal will show a difference first.

Depends on the MOC. They are given the opportunity to notify, a week in our case. Then it hits the portal. Our MOC simply forwarded the USNA email that they received notifying them of the appointment from USNA, which included when it would be loaded into the portal. It was a forward, with a 'congrats' at the top from the MOC. Kind of uneventful actually. Then the portal turned over on the date the email to the MOC said it would. So for sure, there will be a change in status, which triggers the 'change in status' email from USNA. But that appointment offer may be a week old, if your MOC doesn't contact you.

As to the number of reported LOAs, I seem to recall that the reporting of LOAs was not really encouraged (there was no formal 'format' for reporting) until last year. I suspect the list for the classes of 2019 and 2020 had members with LOAs that were not reported. In fact, I think I remember a few negative posts like 'no one cares on I Day if you got a LOA.' Last year, people started posting their 're-applicant' status - something that certainly wasn't done with any consistency in the past.

Over the past couple of years, the lists on the SA forum have changed, especially on the USNA forum. It used to be 'hey, I got an appointment! Thanks for the help.' Thanks largely to the efforts of Murfthesurf, it became a tool people use to follow progress, compare themselves and track congressional districts and states.

While I don't know, I believe the foregoing accounts for much of the discrepancy in reporting and the use of LOAs has not materially changed. That said, perhaps its use was more widespread than suspected.

BTW, I'm not a statistician, but I wish I could be...
