So I have done a lot of reading on these boards as I wait for the results with the rest of you, and I understand where you're supposed to keep working our backup plans for our kids while we wait. But a different line of questioning on the same topic, my daughter has received acceptance letters from A few of her top 5 schools for the nrotc scholarship, but most of them require a deposit at some point. One of them is as soon as March 15th. Do you think the Navy knows which schools have sooner deposit deadlines for admission and will try to fill those programs more quickly? I would hate for her to end up receiving an award to a school that she lost her spot in because we didn't put a deposit down there. But as you can imagine I don't care to put a bunch of deposits down on schools that she will not be able to attend. Your thoughts?

The NROTC scholarship process does not take into consideration any admissions requirements for the colleges. Colleges that fall under the National Association for College Admissions Counseling agree to a May 1st decision date and deposit date, unless you are accepted in a binding early decision program. Did your daughter apply ED to a school? Now, some schools have earlier deposit date for priority housing, which is separate from admissions. Colleges can have an earlier date for this. You will have to decide if you'd like to do this as a back up plan, but will need to decide if the deposit is refundable if you are okay with that. When our DD went through the NROTC Scholarship process 4 years ago, she did an early deposit to her "plan b" college that she intended to go to if she was not cleared by DoDMERB for her NROTC scholarship. Once she was cleared medically for NROTC on (April 31st - Just in the knick of time!), she withdrew her decision to the Plan B school and committed to her top school (which was the NROTC scholarship school). While the Plan B school indicated their deposits were non-refundable, they graciously did refund the deposits in the fall, even though we did not ask for them.

I work for a University and in the admissions and enrollment. I would call the schools in question because under NACAC guidelines (National Association of College Admission Counseling) they are not supposed to require a seat deposit prior to May 1. They may, however, be telling you that you *may* place a housing deposit or that you are free to make a seat deposit as early as March 15 and that is causing confusion? I would definitely call them to find out exactly what they are asking because as I said, a *required* seat deposit prior to May 1st is a violation of NACAC. And even if a student goes ahead and chooses to deposit earlier, it is required to be refundable up to May 1st. Hope this helps.

You beat me to it! Agree with everything. And you are right - I forgot to ask if she applied early decision (which I don't think you are supposed to do if you are trying to go ROTC).

Thank you all! She did not apply Early Decision, just regular admission. I will reread the paperwork again to make sure that they are saying the deposit is required by the 15th of March. I may have misinterpreted it, as I do remember talk about housing choices and all as well. Maybe that is what they were talking about. Let me make sure my information is correct! But a May 1st deadline should work out fine!

She has not already got the scholarship, otherwise I wouldn't have a problem making the deposit to the school she is assigned to. Just waiting on these boards! We got her application in back in Dec and finished all requirements in the system before Jan 1. I feel that she is a strong candidate, but I'm a little biased ;). Waiting to see what the board thinks!
