Commissioning question

I think after is better, but neither is wrong.
Whenever you want to would be my suggestion. My parents gave me my sword at my graduation party which we did a few days ahead of time. Unless he specifically needs it for his commissioning ceremony (which I doubt he does) then I would give it to him whenever you think is best.

Make sure he has it at the commissioning ceremony. If there is a cake that could be the only action it sees.

My son's battalion has a reception after commissioning, a few years back when my older son commissioned parents gave their son a Saber at the reception when they received their commissioning certificates.

Now wait a minute, my older son says he flys his helicopter with his Stetson on the dash while waving a saber out the door with Flight of the Valkyries playing on the load speakers, all while singing "Kill the Wabbit!! Kill the Wabbit" Are you saying he's pulling my leg.
