Excellent training for the realities of the Fleet and Corps.
DH and I had just gotten married, had carefully coordinated PCS dates and orders. He was going to NAS Alameda, I was going to NPS Monterey, we were going to find a place halfway between to rent. He PCS’ed off NIMITZ, had an urgent message to call his detailer. He was now going to San Diego. Geo-bachelorship the first two years we were married.
I was told I was going to Joint or Navy Staff after my USNA tour, so we bought a house in Annapolis. Of course, I got orders (the kind that are so good, you don’t quibble) two weeks after we closed, to Norfolk. Geo-bachelorship again.
Countless instances of this, both small and big.
You just learn to utter a “cheery aye-aye” and adapt on the fly. Years later, in my corporate career, non-vets are always somewhat surprised by how good military folks are at switching plans, operations, goals, etc., and swiftly changing course.
