How long would someone's service commitment be if they fail academically and are asked to disenroll during the Fall or Spring semester of their C3 year? Is it the same as those cadets that make it to graduation? Asking for a friend (of course)....

I don’t think you incur a service commitment until you go to your first class at the start of your junior/2nd class year (e.g. C2C year). If you are a sophomore/3rd class Cadet (e.g. C3C) you (or your friend) should have no service commitment.

No commitment until one minute into that C2C year. After that, it is at the discretion of the Air Force. I believe sometimes there is a financial component too, a pay-back, as it were, also at the discretion of the AF.

So, go for 2 years, go to BCT, and through two summer sessions, but be sure of what you want.

At USMA right now a number of '21 cadets are getting academic counseling to avoid this scenario.
The SAs have a pretty good idea who will and wont make it; they dont want to deal with this any more than the cadets would.

They won't force you outright to disenroll before affirmation/commitment night but they might 'strongly encourage you' to pursue other options.

As DS explained [he is fine BTW] they don't want cadets on the edge just finishing up 4th semester while preparing to enroll at State next August and transfer credits. If you aren't gonna make it they kinda want you out.

But as stated there is discretion ranging from pay back ~$300 K in full to work it off by enlisting for 'X' many years to 'other' if you flunk out after the deadline.

If you aren't going to stay, it's pretty obvious they want you out ASAP, because you're wasting the schools time and money by staying for two free years of college. They also have discretion to let you off the hook 100% if you fail out or quit, less so if you quit. If you fail out they might make you enlist for a couple of years, but there isn't anybody who pays back $300k. 300 is a PR number, the real figure for the payback would be about half or less than half.

Typically they do not like to hit the commitment button over the payback in $$$ option. Biggest reason why is morale. Forcing someone to be there that doesn't want to be there doesn't create good morale. Poor morale is like a cancer, it spreads and not in a good way.
