Does anyone have dates for the CORTRAMID sessions this year? Trying to nail down a family vacation but only have rough estimates for the dates.

No official dates have been released that I have seen. It could be out there now, but I don't think so. Likely won't be until spring. Historically, West Coast is in early summer and East Coast later summer. Though just because your Mid is East Coast does not guarantee they will go East Coast and vice versa. Lots of moving pieces. It is best to just make your vacation plans with the understanding that your Mid might not be there, or plan something last minute when you know for sure when they go to CORTRAMID. This could mean 2 weeks before the 1st session though.

I think this is spot on. It wasn’t CORTRAMID, but NROTC training for our son last summer change significantly even after receiving orders, literally 48 hrs before he was supposed to leave. It was a great lesson: planning a vaca around what you think their summer training dates are could lead to disappointment on the parent’s end. Big Navy made it very clear who was in control 😉.

And just to help fill in some of the context behind this, the NROTC enterprise is at the mercy of operational scheduling and commitments. When Mids visit to see ships, submarines, and aircraft, it is disappointing to find out that ship or squadron headed off on an unscheduled commitment. So this is the case where a butterfly flaps its wings and the 2nd and 3rd and 10th order effects can be surprising.

That’s exactly what happened - ship was diverted due to needing to help with a typhoon situation. I think his orders changed 5x. Then he got to Japan & all flights to Okinawa were cancelled due to the same typhoon making its way to Japan. Received the 3am text from Tokyo - Mom, can I call & tell you what is going on? Three Mids got together & figured out the transit system & headed to a base to wait it out. Then he was flown by himself- first - to Okinawa. Apparently he was the guinea pig 😂. What an adventure! They eventually left for Australia but as you can imagine, he wasn’t making his original flight back home. He was gone almost a month….

This is one of those situations where at the time it is miserable and crazy, but I bet when he looks back at it he sees it as more of "surviving adventure and character builder" rather than a usual CORTRAMID experience (atleast I hope he does). I mean, to be in Asia and this happens is definitely a gut check. I don't wish this to happen to anyone, but what stories to tell for a lifetime.

It was so crazy! Like you can’t make that ____ up. But he didn’t complain about it - just figured it out & got it done. It was a great learning opportunity for us all. He actually had some pretty cool experiences - not everyone gets to take selfies with kangaroos 🦘 at Steve Irwin’s zoo 😆. We’ll see what this summer’s training has in store for him… not sure that one can be topped ….

My son’s unit posted tentative dates for CORTRAMID ‘24 are:
West - May 15 - June 15
East - July 10- Aug 10

This will be the case up until the day they get their retirement paperwork signed and then maybe a few days after that for good measure 😜
Signed,
20+ year spouse who can't even plan when he'll be home for dinner any given day due to op-tempo in current AOR. And I'm serving dinner at 8:30 most of the time anyway.

There's a few chances in the JO shore duty years when things improve temporarily, I promise

Bless your heart ❤️! So much sacrifice on your part too. Rather than dip our toes into, apparently the plan was to dive in head first 😂. It’s all good - better to learn that now vs later. And, I think it’s a great learning experience for him. Who needs sleep 😂. He/we learned so much!

A good outlook to be sure and you will all be fine! I think I can say roughly 50% of the time things work out just as you hope, you just never know which 50, haha 😂

My DS says COTRAMID is only for scholarship mids but I don't know if that is true so research if your kid is not on scholarship.

If you are planning a vacation that requires a lot of advanced and challenging planning and reservations (visiting grandma and grandpa. going to Cabo with their frat buddies, or going to varmint hunting season doesn't count) have your kid talk to his chain of command right away. No guarantees although presumably, the Navy will try to accommodate reasonable requests. Each ROTC unit is commanded by an O-6 who is responsible for the morale, well-being, and future recruitment for their unit so they are motivated to take care of their people within reason.

To make it easier to accommodate, figure out if your kid is supposed to go to COTRAMID East or West then give a wide birth to those dates and plan your vacation then. AFTER coordinating with the chain of command.

Of course, contingencies, weather, ship breakdowns, etc are beyond the Navy's control so make sure you understand you are taking a risk albiet a mitigated one.
