Does anyone have any idea if USAFA has started rolling out vaccines for cadets? I am apart of the incoming class of 2025 and was wondering if they have a plan to vaccinate.

I believe the president announced that Covid vaccines will be available to the adult population may 1st.

Because the vaccine is not fully FDA approved, it will be optional. It only has emergency approval. Once the vaccines become fully approved, they will be mandatory. I think they'll be making them available to the cadet population soon.

Our sponsor cadet told us that some of the cadets have been given a vaccination already. He didn't know how they are being prioritized.
If you choose to get vaccinated & it's available to you, recommend you get it before arriving for BCT

It’s pretty slow-moving because cadets are at the bottom of the DoD priority list for vaccination. That being said some cadets are getting vaccinated already. It went to mission-essential cadets first (Spring Wing Staff and Squadron Commanders) and now has moved on to all seniors. Once all the firsties that want it have gotten it it will continue in a tiered distribution based on our summer positions. I know the current 4-degrees are at the bottom of the list because they aren’t working BCT or serving in leadership positions. Agree with the above about getting it before you come if possible. They still plan on making everyone ROM for 7-days the last I heard.

I haven’t heard about how quickly they’ll offer it to basics.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what does ROM entail? Is it staying in your room 24/7, or just extra precautions for Covid?

ROM = Restriction of Movement
It started out at 14 days last summer which sucked but now it has been moved down to only 7 days. The way it is now they test you on Day 0 then you move into your room and are only allowed in the cadet area and are supposed to not interact outside your roommate until your negative test on day 7 that releases you from ROM.

Ok, thanks so much for the response I really appreciate it.

How are you able to get your teens vaccinated before reporting? We still haven't decided if he is going to get it before FDA approval, but just trying to put all options on the table.

I think it depends on your area and the criteria they have set for receiving a vaccine, I'm 17 but the job I have (delivery driver) allows me to get the vaccine in my county. Got my first dose, second one in a couple weeks :)

Where I live we had some bad weather, but the vaccine sites were still open. When people didn’t show up for their appointments, they gave the vaccines out to anyone there. You can also volunteer at a vaccination center, and they might give you an extra vaccine after your shift.

Pfizer is approved for 16 and up and it really depends on your state and when they start to providing to younger population

I thought I just heard that on our news as I was walking through the room. Keep in mind, I also think I heard that you should keep other shots at least 2 weeks away from COVID vaccine. Those that may need shots prior to arriving to USAFA may need to spread things out.

Yes, Pfizer needs 2 shots and is spaced out in a period of 2 weeks. Moderna, if you are 18 up, requires 3-4 weeks so if by May 1st the age restriction is gone you might want to get Pfizer if you don't have enough time. Also, keep in mind Pfizer and Moderna are effective for longer times( maybe over a year) as it is an mRNA vaccine compared to the one-shot Johnson, which is a conventional vaccine much like the Flu shot. But any vaccine is better than nothing.

Pfizer is 21 days

Yep, DH had Pfizer 1 at VA, 3 weeks later was scheduled for Pfizer 2. My Moderna 1 to 2 was 4 weeks exactly.

I think if DS gets one at all, I would be more open to it being JandJ.

Just a gentle reminder, it's helpful to keep in mind that DS will eventually be apart of the military. Now is the time to start adjusting what you would be open to or not, as I'm guessing sooner than later the vaccine will be a military requirement. Different branches are already making "incentives" for those that voluntarily receive the vaccine. While parents will always be able to give advice and have conversations, DS will become an adult member of the military and parent's will have less of an impact on decision-making.
