Current Freshman willing to answer questions

How much military knowledge do you have to memorize prior to bct/during the academic year? Do you know anyone who chose to not study before bct and how fun was his bct experience?
During the school year do you have to report what's in the news and answer military knowledge questions at or before meals or is that just a rumor/ thing of the past?

You don't have to memorize anything at all. I knew some stuff but plenty of people show up as blank slates...I never expected my basics to have anything memorized this summer before I-Day. That's the whole point of training.

You'll definitely have knowledge tests and everything else sort of depends on how intense your squadron chooses to be.

-I didn't study a lick before basic. I actually had more prior Army knowledge than anything because I was in JROTC but that didn't help me any and it confused me sometimes. Especially going from one style of marching to another, but my experience wasn't any more difficult than another's because I hadn't studied before coming. Knowing the seven basic responses might help you I-day but they'll just find something else to yell at you about.

-Nope that is a lively thing. It all depends on squadron though. Like we have to do it Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. Also, every Sunday at about 1900 all the freshman take a knowledge test and it goes into your MPA and can get you restricted if you fail. (At least this year, it may change next year)

What computers did they give you this year?

Are there restrictions on cell phones after basic?

-We got issued the usual fujitsu laptop but ours differ from years prior because you can detach the keyboard and use it as a tablet.

-Years prior, there were. This year most freshman got their cell phones back on or a few days before Acceptance day. After getting it back we were all allowed to have it all the time. In the past, they could only have it on weekends.

What made each of you pick USAFA? Did you apply to other service academies?

Best advice for leading up to BCT is to enjoy your last little bit of freedom before six weeks of training and memorization

What made each of you pick USAFA? Did you apply to other service academies?

I originally enlisted in the AF and found out about the Academy later. I applied through a program called LEAD (Leaders Encouraging Airman Development) and was accepted to the AF Prep School. I already had a desire to serve and the opportunity to go to USAFA was extremely intriguing. I was back home working in a DVD rental store only a short time before my acceptance. I knew I wanted to be a part of something bigger, and this was my chance so I jumped on it.

I did not apply to the other service academies.

I wanted to go to a school that I would be proud of and that would make me a better person. I also wanted to go somewhere that would allow me to make extremely close friendships. I applied to Navy and Coast Guard in addition to USAFA.

-My parents are prior Army but they played a huge part in me coming here (Ironic I know right) but anyway, I just felt that serving as an Air Force member was the better branch for me. I applied for Annapolis and never finished the application because I was accepted here, I also applied for the Navy ROTC scholarship but I also didn't finish the application. I didn't apply for anything Army.

Are cadets allowed to use graphing calculators? I remember this was mentioned at USAFASS and my element leader mentioned that we would have to use excel. Hoping that was a thing of the past (I remembered this because I was taking the SAT whilago and the graphing calculator made life a lot easier)

Depends on the class. The core math/science classes all use an "honorlator" with no graphing capability but depending on your major you'll probably be allowed to use one after 4-dig year. I honestly would not recommend bringing/buying a graphing calculator during your first semester, there's almost no chance you'll use it.

Hello, I am a sophomore in high school and am hoping to attend the academy one day. What kind of things did you do during high school and what would your advice for high schoolers hoping for an appointment be?

To be as brief as possible. . .

Get good grades in tough classes, play sports, find clubs/organizations where you can be a leader, volunteer your time doing community service, keep your nose clean and most of all live your life. Enjoy your high school years.

If you were looking for more specific things then I suggest you run a search on these forums for one of the "Class of 201* Appointment" threads, see which users got an appointment and then check their history to see if they ever posted a resume of sorts on the forum. That might take some time. Visiting the Academy admissions webpage will also give you some insight into what kind of person is accepted.

I wouldn't do that if I were you....:confused1:

^^^^^ I heard that has happened before and it didn't work out too well for those involved...

Ehh, most of us graduated.

Was this the year that the first attempt at Recognition was canceled?

Nope that was back in 2004-2005ish time period for the classes of 2007 and 2008, but that really had nothing to do with the classes at all and more about what was going on at USAFA at the time as a whole. Honestly, taking the hill at recognition was one of my best memories from USAFA. The class of 1994 in 1991 put their Recognition in jeopardy by going to the golf course the last morning. I would not suggest doing that. That did not end well for them (coming from a 1991 grad who was not happy at all).
