Current Self Prep at Marion Military Institute- ask any questions!

I previously mentioned that I was building a document that had some of my comments and suggestions on the packing list so here is that document! I also include a link to the packing list that is posted on the website so you can review what I wrote alongside it. Let me know if you have any more questions! I currently don't have regular access to my computer because I am working at a summer camp but I will do my best to check often!

I know this an old thread, but I wanted to thank you for this information. My son was accepted to MMI for the SAP program next fall and we will be starting to get these items together for him (birthday/Christmas). I appreciate the time you took putting this together!

Is he applying for an appointment this year? It's kind of early to already be writing that off, isn't it? I ask because I think there's value in going through the process once before entering SAP.

My son is in SAP now, and I know he's doing some things differently this year in terms of his noms, SA apps, etc., than he did last year.

Yes, he has applied this year for 3 Service Academy appointments and for nominations from 4 sources. My son is fully into the process at this point. He attended two Summer Seminars, DoDMERB is complete, all applications are complete with exception of nominations. He has his first congressional nomination interview on Saturday. We are definitely not writing anything off, but after speaking with Lt Col Bowen, my son felt that if he doesn't get an appointment, Marion is an excellent option for next year.

I really wanted to extend my gratitude to Phoebem for putting all of that info together.

I think that’s a great Plan B!

Thank you! He's very excited to have a solid plan for next year, while still being hopeful to receive an appointment. I really appreciate all the information provided in these forums. You all have a wealth of knowledge!

Thank you! My son participated in signing day on Nov 1st, he's a recruited athlete for the Track and Field team at MMI!! Do you know around what day of August the incoming students get there? I don't think he would show up early being that Track is a spring sport. I really appreciate your help!!

My Son reported on Aug 8th, 2022. Safe to assume it'll be around that date .
MMI was absolutely the BEST decision we ever made! DS was a self-prep, worked his butt off, joined every club he could, (3 or 4?), and ended up receiving appointments to all 3 SAs he applied to. USMA, USAFA and USCGA.
Marion, and Colonel Bowen did everything they said they would, did it all really well, and did more!!! Very excellent and experienced support systems there. Exceptionally great at meeting each individuals needs. (Eg: When Dodmerb wanted follow up for low resting pulse, (He's endurance athlete), they knew EXACTLY the perfect Dr's office to send him to, and gave him a ride to and from).
DS is currently a Plebe at West Point. He was MUCH better prepared for everything than if he'd gone directly from HS. AND had the added bonus of showing up for Rday with 14 other MMI grads that he is very close friends with. Which has been very beneficial during this super difficult Plebe year!
Good Luck on your son receiving his appointment! But if no luck this time around, consider the extra year at MMI a blessing!

Thank you so much for your insight. He is absolutely looking forward to this next step at MMI. There's a lot of time between now and April and we don't know how things will shake out for next year, but he's excited to be moving forward. After talking with Lt. Col Bowen he felt confident this is the place for him.

I'm curious - if you play a sport at a junior college, do you lose a future year of eligibility? In other words, if you play a year of baseball at MMI, can you only play 3 years at an SA if you get in? Obviously not the case if you go to NAPS or the like, but what about the civilian prep schools like MMI or NMMI?

I am not 100% sure. I would contact both coaches at both schools to see. I do know that there are both sponsored and non-sponsored cadets at MMI that are currently playing sports. The rules just changed so that's why I am not 100% sure.

The answer is yes, you do use up a year of eligibility. The coaches at CGA leave it up to the students to decide if they want to compete at the MJC or sit out the year. Being able to compete would allow a candidate to maintain top form, while sitting out the year preserves eligibilty at the academy.

The overall theme, though, is the candidates should concentrate on their academics. The coaches would much rather have the student there the entire four years than have them only for a year and fail out academically.

How many preppers (self or sponsored) have received their appointments? And can you do the breakdown of how many for each SA?

I'm told there are 5 so far to WP - 4 sponsored, 1 self-prep. Don't know about other SAs. Please note that it is still very early in the cycle considering that nobody was going to get an appointment unti first semester grades were in.

All that said, others may have more complete info.

I'm told another self-prep from MMI got a WP appointment. So that's 6 to WP and, AFAIK, none yet to any of the other academies. That won't hold, but it's interesting that WP seems to work to get their appointments out earlier than the others.
