I went to the Candidate Visit Weekend in October and I am wondering how exclusive the invitation was and if it will help with admission.

It will help with your decision to attend or not if offered an appointment.

CVWs are offered for a variety of reasons known only to Admissions, often to candidates who might live far enough away from USNA that a visit will help them understand the USNA path better. Presumably, candidates offered a CVW have met a baseline competitiveness level.

There are hundreds of new plebes each summer who did not have an LOA, attend NASS or a CVW.

Sometimes, candidates can ask Admissions directly for one, and may be successful.

It’s really to benefit the candidate.

From when I went back in October it was around 200 candidates that attended the CVW.

I don’t believe that the CVW, in and of itself, has an impact on your application status. However, from what I’ve gathered, USNA only invites candidates that might be a good fit at the academy. It’s not a recruiting tool like NASS is. It’s sole purpose is to give competitive candidates the chance to see what the academy is really about and whether the candidate sees themselves as a mid in their future.

Instead of worrying about your application it’s better to focus on preparing for the academy and tending to plans B-Z at this point of the admissions process.

Two of my sons received CVW invites based solely on the fact that they applied to STEM camp. Both were declined for the camp, but then of course USNA had their info and we currently live in a flyover state, so we figure they were targeted geographically. I would not really call an invitation exclusive, as hundreds go out each season. It is an outreach program more than anything and not attending will not hurt your admission chances in any way, as not everyone can afford to attend a CVW and the academy realizes that.

According to this Impact Report (2021-22) 1,419 candidates attended CVW last year over 9 weekends. (The math suggests 157 per weekend)

I suppose more may have been invited but declined - I would be curious as to the number of declinations and why. I have difficulty imaging that anyone who took the trouble of going through the Herculian application process (to attend "Not College") would decline if invited. But apparently some do as evident within the postings on this board.

The Impact report also states that NASS applications were 5,249 with 2,417 attending. That would be a steep decline from the 8,000+ applications that have been reported for classes in earlier years. I would be interested to hear from the knowledgable what they see in these numbers.
And I apologize in advance if this posting infers or suggests something other than numbers. I have, alas, been afflicted with whatever witchcraft keeps me reading this forum everyday holding over me the ever elusive prize of deciphering the unknowable.

Finances can be a reason people do not accept the invite. For some, it is a substantial expense and may not be possible. I know that there are financial assistance options for some, but not all who need it will seek it.

Some do not accept due to sports or family commitments. I had one candidate decline at the last minute because her mother died. Another was captain of his sports team and had games every WE. Cost is also a major issue for many as stated above.
