The USAFA Class of 2028 Appointee Handbook specifically mentions the Danner Rivot TFX. However, I'm seeing the Tachyons weigh in at 23 oz per pair compared to the Rivots at 56 oz. Tachyons are also a lot less expensive!

As a parent of a candidate with boot lust, I'm looking for some advice from those who have btdt. Which Danner boot stands out to you as better-suited to the needs of a new cadet?

Oh they have recommendations that is different. Nice! Personally go with the best fit. I went with a light weight pair for 199 at the BX. I'm wearing them now while the space X team talks currently. Some people care about more weight, some comfort, some durability etc. I would say try out a few pairs because fit, comfort, weight will change between brands and even within brands (for example most didn't have a female option Im wearing a pair for males and they're great but on the wider side). Find what works within the standards they give you.

My ds got the Tachyons and loves them. He wore them all throughout BCT and still wears them everyday 1.5 years later. Says they are very comfortable. For the record, he has a normal width foot (maybe even slightly narrow...but I only have my other boys' hobbit feet to compare to).

DS is an EE. Finding comfortable shoes requires research/time/expense. LOL! Danner has a great return policy, so I think we'll order the Tachyons and Rivots and see what's most comfortable. Thanks for the comfort insight @FlyFalcon

My other 3 sons also have very wide feet so I know what you mean!! I'll be interested in what you find. Good to be thinking about it early.

I think the lighter boot (Tachyon) is more comfortable for the academy. If they were deployed the Rivot would probably be the better option since it is more rugged with better ankle support. Rivot is also a warmer boot. But test them out and order several sizes for the best fit.

As an old Infantry Officer and Operator I can tell you that you can't guess which boot until you wear them. Try them on personally and feel if there are any rub points or irritations in the boot because everyone is different and what works for one will not work for everyone. I can honestly say that not too many pieces of equipment can make your life as easy or as miserable as the correct or incorrect boots. People knock the issue boots but that same company makes a lightweight version that is a really comfortable boot. Both my sons wear them and didn't like the Danner, Nike or other options so it really is a matter of getting some time in them to find out for yourself the best fit. What seems like a small touch point now can become a major blister or worse after days of being in those boots.

Agree with All3Services. I would go with the boots that work the best for your candidate. Everyone suggested Nikes for my DD, and they were lighter and seemed like better for running in, but they didn't work for her. Gave her blisters. She wore them to school, to workout, poured hot water on them, and still blisters. We bought her Danners, don't remember the model now, and those were the ones that worked. She wears them now. I wouldn't worry too much about the exact brand and model. So long as they are within regulation, they will work. The Danners DD has are insulated, I think, but I don't think that makes much difference day to day. I think DD wore the issued boots during the Jack's Valley portion of BCT because they get pretty dirty, muddy, and wet. You just need to try out a few pairs to see what works, even if that means buying something, wearing it, and not being able to return. It's annoying to "waste" that money, but worse if the cadet gets blisters!

Our DS tried on the Tachyons at a store close to USAFA. There is a strap across the ankle that pinched a bit for him, so they weren't the best for his needs. But more than that, the Tachyons do not have a waterproof upper bootie (as specified in the 2028 Appointee Handbook), so we're going to steer clear of the Tachyons, at least for use during BCT. He also tried on a Tanicus at a surplus store (these have Danner Dry), and they were a bit more comfortable for him. We weren't able to find the TFX anywhere.

I think many cadets use the bricks for the water/wet parts of BCT.

Would definitely recommend the tachyons, light weight and cool which is great for Jacks. Also on using the bricks for the assault course, I ignored my cadres advice and wore the tachyons and was better off than my squadies who wore the bricks. The water/mud drains right out of the tachyons the second you get out of it. Everyone else was running around with 5 lbs of water in each shoe.

Seriously consider the Bellville C320 One Xero you can get on Amazon. Same brand as the issue boot so they are 100% compliant with regs and they are a lighter weight version. Some might find the ankle area can rub in some of the more sport designed boots and these are about as rugged as they get and hold up really well to all abuse. Just a suggestion as another option for those still looking.

Does have experience with Oakley boots? I plan on getting a pair of those.

As always, depends on your foot and personal preference so you really need to try them on. Biggest thing with some of the "designer" style boots like Nike and Oakley is they have a reputation in some areas for shorter life with harsh use versus brands like Danner and Belleville. From personal experience I found the Oakley had too many rub points but that's just me.

Thanks, all! We ordered Fox River AND Darn Tough socks today and several pairs of boots including the Bellville C320 One Xero @All3Services My credit card was smoking!

FYI Danner's boots ship free from their website when ordered within the US and return shipping is free, too.

I loved my Danner Tachyons on active duty. As a reservist, with the move from ABUs to OCPs I bought some cheapo boots and will probably replace them with Tachyons.

I love my Danner Skyridge civilian hiking boots, spent all day in them on Saturday out and about with my Cub Scouts.

So do the Belleville and many others if you buy them through Amazon Prime. Good luck with your boot selection and remember a small point of irritation can become a major issue with time. You will LOVE Fox River socks, that's all both my boys and I wear.

My DS wore his Nike SFB Gen 2 throughout BCT except 1 day where they have to get wet. The idea is for them to have something dry to switch out just in case it didn't dry in time.

Main issue I am seeing with Danners are the only ones with Waterproof status also are insulated. Thinking that might not work for BCT. Anyone try Garmont T8 Extreme Evo's?
