For the most part, I need to commit to college by May 1st. Assuming several appointments may go out after that deadline, how does that work if at that point I am enrolled in a different college? Would I just cancel and pick up USAFA at that point?

We just enrolled at the Plan B school today. It said deposit was refundable until June 12th. I wanted my son to secure a housing spot and could not wait any longer. Especially if it just for them to say no to the academy.

My son did the same thing. Move forward with Plan B until we get word from USAFA. Better to be safe than sorry.

We have paid deposits and housing for plan B. We’re moving forward assuming USAFA will not be coming through since it has not yet. If it does…we will adjust accordingly.

Almost 2 years ago, my DS got a TWE from the USAFA and was fully committed to his plan B college. We had paid the deposits and he was enrolled in all his classes and selected his roommates. Then on June 5th, he received an email that the status on his Portal changed and it turned out he received an offer to the USAFA Prep School. No call or letter, just a single email saying he had 48 hours to respond. He instantly accepted the Prep school offer and reached out to the university he was enrolled at and explained the situation. They were very understanding and deferred his enrollment for one year and refunded 100% of his deposits, even though they didn't have to. He is a doolie/freshman at USAFA right now. I'd suggest to go full ahead with plan B, and if an offer to USAFA, or any other SA, comes through, accept it and call up to the plan B school, explain the situation and hope for the best. Worst case a lost deposit is a small price to pay to attend USAFA.

When is Decision Day for USAFA? Should one assume if you have heard nothing by then that it’s a rejection? Does USAFA have a hard date for all this?

I think Decision Day is May 1st which aligns with College Decision Day, which falls on May 1 each year. I had May 1st date to Accept/Decline. This was on the website:

We will typically notify you of your appointment status by April 21, ahead of the National Commitment Day.

For what it’s worth, DD was not expecting to get a waiver, and we subsequently moved forward with Plan B. Paid the enrollment deposit, registered for housing, etc. now that she has a waiver and is in the process of wrapping her head around what’s the best move for her at this point, if she chooses the academy, we will tell her that’s it and to stick with it and, unbeknownst to her, will not cancel her enrollment until August. Maybe she gets into Basic and realizes this isn’t for her, or maybe she gets injured… either way, won’t let her know because don’t want her to have that in back of mind while dealing with the pressures of adjusting over the summer.

This is exactly our plan!

Just a reminder to everyone; college decisions are not legally binding. At this point, I would recommend "committing" and putting your deposit into that university, but if USAFA comes through you still have the chance to tell that university "nah nevermind" and enroll at USAFA. Many initial deposits are refundable as well, normally until mid-late June. I understand some people are concerned about losing out on money, but a service academy is an *amazing* financial deal, and a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Got TWE with just hours to spare before decision day was over, so we plunked down a $500 non refundable deposit on Plan B. End of that week, kid gets a call with an offer for a Falcon, and 4 days to decide/accept and pick a prep school. Kid made decision, picked prep school, notified Plan B college's financial advisor that was assigned and worked 1:1 with the reason why, and they wouldn't budge. They simply said, "congratulations, good luck, I'll let them know you're not coming." 2 weeks before Plan B school was supposed to start, a different counselor emailed kid to say, "why haven't you submitted your paperwork?" Kid was like, I already told so and so I'm not coming due to receiving a Falcon Scholarship." $500 is nothing to sneeze at for us. I could pay a couple of bills with that. But, it is what it is.
