Hello All! My DS recently accepted his appointment to USNA, and will need to decline his 4 year ROTC scholarship at some point. I'm sure there are threads that detail this type of situation, but I wanted to ask opinions on when he should notify the ROTC board and selected school? Also, even though he accepted the ROTC scholarship, and was admitted to his first choice university, we have not yet paid the admissions fee. Any advice would be appreciated! Side note, June seems like an eternity away!!

My son reached out to his ROTC contacts to notify them once he accepted his offer... not sure I can provide you guidance on the acceptance of his 1st choice university... as we held all our offers until he got what he wanted... then we notified ROTC and the universities he did not choose. We figured he had until May 1st and post that date, his spot at those universities are not held anyway... GOOD LUCK and CONGRATS!

Yes, same situation. Son's medical exams for AMI for Army ROTC national scholarship are imminent. Seems like he should decline and not proceed with the medical waiver process but what if he breaks an arm or something between now and I-Day. Will research the "backup plans" threads tonight.

Same situation, here. DS accepted USNA, but we're not sure if the broken arm/pneumonia in June would also preclude NROTC? We have been told to "preserve path to plan B"....but maybe that really means plan C...college for a year prior to re-apply?

This year's requirement for NSI change the plan B last minute plan for sure.

This is several years ago, but my daughter had a NROTC scholarship to one of her top schools. She was set to attend and had a late appointment. We contacted ROTC to give the update, but as we had already paid the deposit and it was past May 1st, we deferred her acceptance for a solid plan B.

Here is another thread under the ROTC tab

Please, please, please let the school know as soon as possible. There are young men (mine included) who are waiting for scholarships to come open. Our recruiter told us we will likely have to wait until kids decide on service academies. If you know, without a doubt, your son won't attend the university he was chosen for, the kindest thing to do is to let them know.

Oh for sure. My son is waiting too. When I posted that we deferred my daughter’s acceptance to the civilian college (as opposed to Naval Academy), we let NROTC know that she would be passing on that option. Just didn’t want to go through the entire application process again of applying to colleges and figure if she hated Navy, she likely would also know what life in the Navy would be like and therefore would apply to ROTC as well. Just wanted to clear that up that we didn’t sit and hold onto a scholarship

I would personally wait until the last possible moment. I realize that pisses of people who are waiting for additional scholarships to open up, but there is always the possiblity that something will happen (like an injury) and that the academy goes by by. The fallback will be the Rotc scholarship

All the services offer more scholarships than they know will be accepted. Just like universities offer more acceptances than they know will actually enroll. They are very good at predicting the yield they are looking for. The actual number who use the scholarships. they know some who are offered XROTC scholarships will also gain admission to a SA or use some other type of scholarship. This is all figured into the number of scholarships that are offered. So by one scholarship winner turning down a scholarship, it does not mean the scholarship is "freed up" and offered to someone else.

Yes. I agree. That should be done immediately.
