I looked through the course catalog and didn't see a photography class offered at KP. I'm going to ask here just in case. Does KP offer a photography class at any point? Thanks so much!

I have never heard of a photography class at KP. If you are looking for electives, USMMA is not for you. The curriculum is jam packed with classes you will need to pass license exams which is required for graduation. My DS could not fit in any electives due to being a "shopper" (both deck and QMED). My DD took only one elective, and had to take 22 credits to do it. If you are into photography, there are several mids who work as photographers during INDOC and at important events throughout the year.

Thanks so much! I'm perfectly happy with all of the classes. I'm excited to learn all about how things work and how to fix them. My dream is to do 6 months out at sea and then come back home for 6 months and restore classic cars using my KP education! KP definitely offers more opportunity than any other service academy from what I can see. Thanks so much!

Pretty sure that there is a photography club. Electives are very limited at KP. In my day, the main option was in Humanities. There were two options. Humanities and Anthropology. There were three or four classes in each option. The Anthropology tract was the most popular, and the one that I took. Also had the option of some engineering electives. I recall taking a course on Marine Gas Turbines and Engineering Economics.

Don't know if they still offer the option of "Independent Studies". Basically you can create your own class. If you can find someone to "teach" it and write a good enough syllabus you can get credit for it as a class.

There used to be a series of classes in nuclear power and Solar/hydrogen power that were done as independent studies.

I’ll likely just try to find a class that teaches anything and everything about carbureted gas engines. Id like to restore cars and when I looked in the course catalog, it seemed like the courses centered around diesel and jet turbine engines so a class that focuses specifically on gasoline engines would be beneficial. Then again, diesel and gas isn’t all that different other than ignition methods.

I don't recall any classes involving gasoline engines, carbureted or injected. In my day we did have a club and access to a garage for gearheads.

Do you feel that a midshipman could participate in the auto club and take part in the EMT program at KP? I don't want to bite off more than I can chew but I also want to get as much out of a free education as I can.

You can do as much as you want but be very careful about taking on too much plebe year. I saw more than one person get involved in multiple extracurriculars then get kicked out for bad grades. My recommendation to any plebe is keep it to one extracurricular the first half of plebe year and then start adding more as you go. A GPA solidly above 2.0 plebe year can be a very nice cushion to fall back on if you have a bad trimester later.

Exactly. You will be loaded up pretty heavily with both regimental obligations and classwork, especially the first half (2/3?) of Plebe year. We were on the quarter system in my day. I managed to goose my GPA to over 3.0 by the end of third class year. . . then I pretty much coasted; but never failed a class.

Like it was said before if you are looking to take electives USMMA is definitely not for you. The only way you can really take electives is to be either straight engine or straight deck, but even then there is very few electives most of which are not the type of electives you would want to take; rather just something the teacher wanted to teach so he or she made it an elective. I was straight deck (marine transportation) and was able to take an LNG elective for an endorsement on my license. But the selection of electives are very few and the list drop downs a lot too once people in enroll in electives and they can’t meet the minimum amount of students in one class do to USMMA being such a small school

Understood, thanks for the heads up!
