my p/c is in very low spirits - all i have been hearing is that the upper classes eats all the good food at lunch time, that there is nothing left and they have no time to eat. He says he doesn't have enough time to go to breakfast and says he only eats food at dinner. He says he has lost 17 pounds since the 2nd week of indoc. I just don't know what to say to him. Does anyone have advice on this ? His emails seem to be getting worse and worse. Thanks

Does he play some sport that prevents him from going to breakfast on time? Otherwise every morning their CTO will take them to breakfast where even if your p/c doesn't want to wait in line for the usual stuff there are other options which are quick to get and eat.

As for lunch: I'm a table captain myself and it should be that the plebes eat first. I and everyone else can go to the NEX, Seafarer, or our rooms for something to eat where as they cannot. If the food runs out before everyone gets some they can go back and get more. The salad bar is always available and a PB&J is a good quick and dirty lunch when short on time.

Unless your p/c has a class that starts early or last minute homework to finish, there should be plenty of time to eat.

Sympathize

Sorry, I have no advise but our P/C is saying the same thing. No time for breakfast and the other meals hold up to the Delano reputation. He too has lost about 15 lbs and was a skinny 18 year old to start with. He asked for more white tee shirts size small, not the medium he wore just one month ago.

But in talking with him on the phone yesterday it's like a camaraderie thing, surviving the bad food and learning how to make "mandango sauce" which I now know is a mixture of ranch dressing and Franks hot sauce that makes "everything" at Delano taste "delicious".

And that big steak dinner on Parents Weekend is less then 4 weeks away!!

weight loss

3/C DS lost 32 pounds from indoc to parents weekend. When we saw him - it was a shock, he was sooo skinny. It was a combination of the food, being on the top floor of his dorm, the running everywhere, and probably the stress.

Your PC's will make it past this stage and just keep reminding them of the bigger picture. You know that they are strong, heck just getting into the MMA is a major accomplishment. Encourage them past this part and know that this too will pass.

We sent gatorade packs and power bars. Are they allowed this year?:thumb:

Just to comment on the request for smaller white tees: my DS prefers to wear a medium size tee, though a large would fit him better. But now, on his request, we just sent him 3 packs of new small tees. The reason was not that he lost weight. It was simply to pass his uniform inspection. The necks are not tight enough on the medium tee! Sound like they need to fit more like a choker. I picture him in my mind now like Lou Ferrigno in The Incredible Hulk, with shoulders ripping through the tee. I'm glad he wants to look sharp and can't wait to see him in person in 25 short days.:thumb:

We've heard the same thing from our DS. He rows in the morning and can eat at the waterfront sometimes. We've also been sending power bars and muscle milk.
He seems happier now...not as hungry still very tired!

At lunch time it all depends on the table captain. they set the mandate for who gets the food first. I have the plebes place the tray at their end so that they can eat first. There is enough to eat, the quality of said food might be terrible, but there is enough.

:) well, MY DS is doing his part to make sure the P/Cs have their choice...
"I'll have that chicken"
"Oh, it's NOT chicken?"
"What's THAT over there?" (kitchen worker shrugs shoulders)
...
Okay... I'll just have the salad bar :)

So, MY DS is leaving what the P/Cs are saying is the "Good Food".
someone, please tell me, what food IS that?

"Breakfast, it's the most important meal of the day"--Grandmother

At least, they should grab an OJ and some fruit,
and PB&Js are always good, although mine just made PBs (jelly can get on uniform and is hard to clean up/not worth it)

BTW, by the end of the 1st tri, you will be amazed at the changes.
By the end of the first year, you'll wonder who this kid is.
By the end of 1st sea term, you'll be astounded how resourceful he is.
By the end of 2nd sea term, you'll be stunned at how mature and responsible he is.
And, by the time he walks across the stage at graduation, I know he'll look back at us and say ("thanks Mom!") [ ps. I'm the Dad :) ]

DD as a plebe enjoyed amusing the upperclass with her response to the order to recite the lunch menu. If it was something particularly disagreeable, she would recite "Salad Bar, Sir/Ma'am." They gave her a hard time asking if she was implying they needed to eat salad bar for their weight and then made her recite the actual menu. They then responded that she had been right the first time - it was a salad bar day. It always got her a laugh, but I'm sure she knew who she could do that with and who would react badly.

Lunch is still the meal she is most likely to avoid or where she eats very little. She kept a stash of power bars in her room and became fond of PB and instant oatmeal. Go figure!

My DS didn't realize how bad the food was at Delano Hall until he was surprised with a picnic by the Captain of his team. He said he got to eat "real" food, hamburgers and hotdogs (and he hates hotdogs). He also said all the Coke was gone in like 5 minutes! After the picnic, he realized that yes, the food he had become accustom to was lousy but since he practically grew up on peanut butter (his choice), he said he was fine.

My DS has not complained about the quality of the food, only the quantity. I guess I prepared him well by cooking large amounts of lousy food during his childhood!:shake:

enough food

My d/s has no complaints about the quantity of food he is getting. Is it possible that the problem could be within a certain companh?

thanks so much for everyone's comments and insights......i will ask my son about his table captain and what is happening in his section. He is used to eating food similar to what is available in Delano, having attended many years of boy scout summer camps and mess hall food, and even MRE's at the national jambo. So I think it is more the question of the quantity that is available...glad to know there is pj & j out there as well.

Hopefully a current mid can clarify for me:

How in the world are there complaints about the quantity of food? When I was there when the table got low one of the plebes simply went back and got more. Sure there were days when things ran low (Wing day, chicken nugget day, etc), but that was after pretty much every table had almost two servings.

Maybe this has changed, I know a couple years ago they had some serious food issues, but I was under the impression this had improved.

As mentioned in a previous post, last year wife would send DS a "survival" package consisting of packaged tuna, power bars and nutella, among other things. Not sure if plebes are allowed to have food in their rooms, but they learn to be very resourceful :) It seemed to keep him nurished.

This was in no way a fix to the problem. It is well known that Delano Hall has had a reputation for poor food, but as parents there's not a lot wed can do. It should be an easy fix as all it takes is some positive leadership. I was talking to the head of UT Maritime and he fired three different food service companies before getting one that was acceptable. It's not hard and takes someone who is interested in the welfare of their people - possibly the new Supe will have this near the top of his agenda . . . . .

Whose purview does this come under: the Supe or Commandant??

He needs to talk with the R Commander. Apparently there is a midshipman who is in charge of working with Nana Services to make sure there is enough food. He needs to start with his PC and go from there.
