Finally Got the E-mail

My son got his email this morning as well. He just said, "Well, I guess that's not where I'm meant to be." Then he accepted his NROTC scholarship. I guess we will see what happens next! It's such a long and stressful ride...but I'm glad he took his best shot at it.

I feel bad because I am glad we finally have an answer and we can now move forward with plan B. But if she truly wants to be there she will try again. Gonna be a tough day for a lot of people.

My girl is so amazing. She got her email at 7:15 and has dried her tears, working on plan B and has decided enough tears and is now waiting for the class of 2022 applications to open and she is going to try again. That's my girl. Her BGO called her and told her he would help her in any way he could. Proud of my girl to get back up so quickly.

...and it's officially over for me. Thank you everyone on this forum for your great advice, stories, and company. It has been a great ride, one I won't forget anytime soon.

Us too. Got the email this am at 7:15. She is heartbroken but plan B is already in the works. She may try again next year she said but right now we are working on setting up a dorm room. Good luck to everyone else who is still waiting.
So sorry to hear this, Madzmom! I've been following your saga as it paralleled with our own DD. I'm practicing my speech for her if the time comes, they've worked so hard for this! Prayers for you guys as she moves forward into the next big thing to conquer.

I have shared my daughters journey a few times on this site but feel I need to once again. All is not lost here friends. DD is a 2016 HS graduate. She did not apply to SA last year. She did apply to many top colleges. Notre Dame, Georgetown, UVA, Tulane, BC, American University and UMD. She was #5 in class of 502, 4.65 GPA, 12 AP courses, 1380 SAT and 32 ACT and the list goes on. Four year varsity soccer, track, volunteer, mission work. Well, our fall of 2016 was full of one rejection, deferral and waitlist after another. By Jan she had only been accepted to UMD. She had to come up with plan B. She applied to a few other school. This time last year she was accepted to BU, UMD and George Washington University. She accepted GW moved on though not really feeling 100% she was in the right place. She studied hard, built a relationship with her professors and got involved. In Dec. she decided to apply to the SA . USNA, USAFA and USCGA as she realized this is where she needed to be. She got a late start but worked to get a congressional and POTUS nomination. Two weeks ago she was appointed to USAFA and last week to USNA. Still waiting on USCGA but Navy is her dream so she accepted right away. We truly believe she had to experience the rejection/challenges of last year and work through the fall to get where she is today. She did a lot of maturing this past year and is now ready for the challenge of the USNA. My advise to all who got the TWE, accept plan B with no regrets, work hard to get top grades in courses similar to those of the USNA, CONNECT WITH YOUR COLLEGE PROFESSORS they will write you great letters of rec, get involved in stuff on campus, show leadership and reapply for next year. She looks at this past year as her NAPS at a really amazing college. Best of luck you all of you.

Thanks so much for sharing all of this! I really needed to read it.

DS got the email this morning too. Although disappointing, it was expected. He had no nomination. All three MoC's nominated him, but all to the USAFA. We are still awaiting an answer from the USAFA and USCGA. Hopefully soon. If those don't work out, then it is on to Plan B (4 year AFROTC Scholarship).

Best of luck to those still waiting or those moving on to Plan B. No reason to hang your head. These are outstanding kids and even though they didn't get an appointment, they are still on to bigger things. And that says a lot to their character and willingness to make the hard choices and properly set priorities.

I am still pulling for your DS for USAFA, RickD_USAF.

Great parents make great kids.

Can BGOs give any guidance on why a student was not offered an appointment? Do they have access to that info?

The BGO can make an educated guess based on his/her experience but has no specific information on why Admissions made the decision they did. In most cases at this point of the process, it's simply a numbers game -- too many well-qualified candidates and not enough slots. It's the same "problem" many top schools face. For many USNA candidates, the issue is probably that they didn't "win" their MOC slate and weren't strong enough to earn a slot out of the national pool (made up of nominees who didn't win their slates).

Received my TWE this morning at 7:12 AM. This was the email, with the subject topic being "United States Naval Academy Application Status Change Notification"

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for applying to the United States Naval Academy Class of 2021. I regret that we are unable to offer you an appointment to the Naval Academy or its preparatory programs this year. The competition for admission is keen and each year we must turn away many young men and women with great potential.

A number of factors were considered to determine your eligibility for an offer of appointment, these include but are not limited to, scholastic background, leadership experience, extra-curricular activities, athletics, and standing in a particular nomination category. Unfortunately, if you had a medical waiver pending, there will be no further review of your medical status.

I do want you to know that there are a significant number of midshipmen currently enrolled at the United States Naval Academy who were not successful in their initial or subsequent attempts to gain admission, were admitted after two or more years of college. If you wish to reapply next year, you can continue to strengthen your application by continuing your education in a technical major at a 4-year college. The curriculum followed by all first and second year Midshipmen at the U. S. Naval Academy, regardless of major selection, provides the greatest opportunity to strengthen your application and includes the following courses: Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III, Chemistry I and II (with a lab), Physics I and II (with a lab). More advanced courses in math, science and engineering will also bolster an application.

Finally, I want to let you know that there are other options for becoming a Naval or Marine Corps Officer, including Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) found at various universities, or Officer Candidate School (OCS) which you can attend after college graduation. Your local recruiter can provide more information. Thank you again for your interest in the Naval Academy and I wish you every success in the future.
