I will be attending Session 1 of NASS and am wondering if it is best to do a "red-eye" flight (Friday night) that gets me into BWI early the morning of June 2...or do a non-stop flight on June 2 that gets me into BWI at 4 pm. I am planning on using the NASS shuttle from BWI and feel like the same day flight may be cutting it too close. If I choose the overnight flight, I may not be well rested for the first day. Any advice would be appreciated. Anyone else flying out of Sacramento?

That’s tough- I would say probably the same day flight. You’ll need rest and not much happens on day one because some people don’t get in until late for reasons like yours. During my session there were no repurcussions for arriving late- the mids were very accommodating.

My son did the Red Eye... yes he was tired in the morning but got time to relax in the dorm, meet other attendees and play some basketball... very chill before they start up in the evening...

If I recall from last year DS had to arrive at BWI earlier than 4pm to catch the USNA bus. He took a super early flight on the same day and arrived around noon. He grabbed a meal and then checked in with the shuttle. He wasn't sure he would be able to eat after he checked in so he made sure he ate first. I think you will want to check the arrival instructions to make sure you know the time window of the shuttle. It would be worth flying during the night to ensure that he doesn't have to make alternate arrangements to get to USNA.

Now that's what I'm talking about!!!! A candidate that asks his own questions, arranges his own transportation, and charts his own course! I'd send you the BFE right now, but there a few more hoops for you to jump through. You will probably jump over them though!
Well done, and GOOD LUCK!

I'm pretty sure shuttle buses started at noon and the last one was at 4 or 4:30, my son 's flight last year gave him time to get his luggage grab a bite and then find a Mid to board the bus. The first day is pretty laid back, the next day is your CFA so you want to be well rested to post a good score.

I attended NASS last year and I am from San Jose. I flew a 6 am flight out of Oakland the morning of and that worked fine. Sacramento is maybe like an hour and a half out of Oakland at that time of the morning so that should be fine. It worked out well for me and actually helped with the time change.

Thanks- the earliest I can arrive for a same day flight is 3:15...out of Oakland. Out of Sacramento, I can get in at 3:40...willing to travel to Oakland- or even San Jose- just looking for the best option.

My DS went last year. He took the overnighter from LAX to BWI. He was super early but didn't mind at all. He hung out with other nasters that showed up early and they were able to hang out in the USO lounge.

When he did arrive to NASS, because he was so early, he was able to play sports with some of the MIDs. He loved it, but not everyone would.

Being an airline family, I did some checking for you. If you choose to fly the day of, definitely look at the SW nonstop from SMF-BWI 7:40am-3:40pm or UAL SMF-BWI (via DEN) 5:15am-3:07pm. The only problem with a connecting flight is that you could experience an added delay. I’d steer away from an all-nighter (unless you are used to travel and time changes.)

Best wishes, and have a super time!

Thank you! I didn’t know about the United flight. I’ll check it out.
