Is it possible to defer the AROTC scholarship a year? Our graduating senior received a U.S. State Department scholarship to study Mandarin for the academic year (no credit awarded). His college has approved the deferment. He is a 4-year scholarship recipient.

My DS did a Rotary exchange in Taiwan during a gap year and had his AROTC scholarship deferred. His Big 10 State U lobbied on his behalf.
It was the best investment the Army ever made. They got a Mandarin speaker and it cost them nothing extra.

Speak to Cadet Command about the deferment, as they are the decision authority. The worst case scenario is no, but if he is on a gap year, he can reapply for the HS scholarship, but now with a stronger application. Odds are, he will be offered a 4YR scholarship again.
