Hangout: USNA Induction Day / I-Day Class of 2028: Thursday 27 June 2024

Less than 8 weeks to go for I-Day for C/O 2028. As I reflect on my own journey since my DS accepted his appointment and subsequently reported for I-Day in 2021, I am excited for the new P2B and their parents as they start a wonderfully complex journey of "firsts" that can only be described as a rollercoaster. Parents go through a wholly separate and different rollercoaster, sometimes in parallel and sometimes not even in the same park, as their MIDN. My DS will be one of of those Firsties that will help lead, guide, shape, coach and take care of your DS/DD for the next year. I know he will do his best along with the rest of the class of 2025.

However I am saddened as I am looking at the end of my rollercoaster ride and a year of lasts--summer/Christmas leave together, football games, visits to MidStore, trips to the Yard, Chapel services, Glee concerts, meals in DTA, pretzel dogs from the Amish market, etc. I could go on but the misting over my eyes is making it hard to type.

I will stop for now and leave you with some thought: soak up as much time with your DS/DD over the next 8 weeks. You will not get these 8 weeks back. This could possibly be your last eight weeks together for long time. Don't stress about what to take to I-Day, getting all the paperwork done, etc...that stuff will happen. Enjoy being together, spend the days just being together, eat together, workout together, whatever you do just be together.

Dont Give Up the Ship!

Beautiful summary.

Amish Market pretzel log withdrawal. Brutal.

Very important point. As the P2Bs get ready to depart for I-Day, for at least the next 9 years all returns to their childhood home will be relatively short visits. Hang onto this time now.

Thanks for posting. This hit me like a ton of bricks.

It's much earlier because Memorial Day weekend (typical graduation weekend) is early this year with the way the last Monday falls for the month. And because they make it at the end of Sea Trials now.

I apologize if this has been asked and answered already. I cannot find anything about this in the SAF search, and we are in the USNA paperwork morass right now. Lol. The PTR package document says, "You should have received an email from sponsor@usnamail.usna.edu to your personal
email." DS has not. He doesn't seem to care, but DW and I would like for him to get that questionnaire completed. We want him to get a sponsor family, as we live far from Annapolis. Has anyone else's DS/DD not received the email?

... so the sponsor form (in PTR package) gives you two options: request and decline.

My DS declined due to our moving across the gate.

My DS did receive this email with a link to the form. I just had him check to see if there was a way to contact them on the form and this email is provided if users are having issues accessing the form:
sponsorapplicationhelp-group@usna.edu
Perhaps sending them an email stating your issue that supplies his name and candidate # can get you on the right track. Good luck.

Can someone share the link to fill out form for DBDS cards (for entrance to the yard by car)? I know I saw this someplace, but can't find it now.
Thanks!
Jess

Go to USNA Plebe Summer Home. Class of 2028 documents are now being uploaded to replace 2027. Scroll through PTR to see links. One of them is the DBIDS. I just saw it.

So if a midshipman cannot swim 100 yards and tread water for 15 minutes, they get sent to a remedial.
What does this remedial look like?

What is the date and time of this year's Herndon Climb?

Also, does anyone know how to find the live coverage on YouTube?
The date is May 15th and I believe the start time is 8:00am. I am not sure about the information for the livestream.

During PS you will have swim sessions. Really it’s assessing Plebe’s ability and getting them comfortable in the pool. Also swimming feels good after the heat and beating the body takes. During the academic year, if remedial swimming is needed it’s not punitive. It’s to get more attention and work with instructors. If this is a pain point, find a strong swimmer in your company and just swim. You will improve quickly.

Working hard on the skills in the pool with others lacking skills. Just another way to feel mentally and physically exhausted.

Back in less-kinder-language days at OCS where I went, people went to Stupid Swim at 0530. Or Stupid Run. During free periods during the academic day, there was Stupid Nav. I was very happy to not have to do any of that.

USNA will cheerfully bring non-swimmers up to acceptable levels, but it’s a time sink most can ill afford to have.

For any appointees here who are not confident in the pool, I recommend trying to get a few adult swim lessons in at the Y, just in basic skills and to gain confidence. You don’t have to be Michael Phelps, but be a little more confident with breath control and basics.

Sounds like a fun(not really) time at OCS haha
With the help of my fellow appointees and some good ol' Internet, I finally figured out the science of swimming.
Apparently, you EXHALE before you get your head above, NOT when you're above water. I always wondered how swimmers exhaled so quickly and inhaled a lot when they get above water.
With some work, I think I can get decent at breaststrokes.
But for the life of me, it will take a while to learn combat sidestroke.

Stew Smith’s numerous CSS videos on YouTube, plus his website.

What information goes into the "DOD" field on the Mini-Registration Form?
DS was confused about this too. He determined this field is left blank if you are not prior military, as prior military would have DOD information to enter there because they would already have military medical coverage.

I hope he was correct in thinking that as he has already sent that form in. Maybe someone will chime in that knows for sure.
