Hangout: USNA Induction Day / I-Day Class of 2028: Thursday 27 June 2024

Greetings All -

Didn't want to jinx it by coming into this thread early, but now that DS has accepted. . .I can hang with you folks :) .

I was checking his portal after his acceptance, and noticed some of the docs that are now needed. Most are fairly easy to fill out or get filled out, but I wanted to call your attention to the Police Record Check Form. We had some challenges in getting the form filled out for DD by the local Police Department, which took a couple of months, and several visits to get it done. I have seen posted on here that some have needed to go to the County Sherriff's office instead of their local PD in order to get it filled out.

Bottom line, this one form could take significantly longer than you think to get filled out, so I would advise getting it done early. Hopefully it is a smooth process, but I would not want anyone scrambling around in June trying to get this filled out.

Best regards to all, and Go NAVY, Beat Army!

This, by far, was the most difficult document to get fulfilled for our c/o '27. Our county required it be faxed in. That was an interesting conversation with an 18 year old explaining a fax and the need to go to a UPS store. She ended up faxing 2 or 3 times and never received confirmation of receipt. We assumed it eventually found its way there.

Yes, we had difficulties to get this done. If your kid is under 18, get ready for some challenges in getting this form.

I would say that the police record form poses challenges for local law enforcement. They don’t see this often. I would suggest a pre stamped addressed envelope, and an in person visit explaining that this is not a background check. Just a ‘hey we haven’t met, this cool cat is all good’ and we are happy to support him/her.

^^
This is what my appointee did. Showed up in person, introduced himself, said was just appointed and asked cops to help with the form. Was congratulated, asked for ID and social, got form filled on the spot.

Is there a schedule of events? Anything happening on the 26th? We fly in June 25th in the evening and will be in the area until the 28th. I wanted to make sure we didn't miss anything important.

Our DD wanted to hang out on the Yard the day before IDay. She wanted to see the priors and Naps go through in-processing and she met up with others in her company so they could have a familiar face, see smiles, hear their names before IDay. I think she met about 7 or 8 from her company that day. Each incoming plebe is different, so follow the lead of your soon to be mid.

... so here are my $0.02 cents:

* Read and reread and reread the Superintendent's appointment letter and the Permit to Report Package.

* One binder with all the required documents to be hand carried by the soon Plebe-to-Be; alternate binder carried by parents for backup. Note: first page should be the Permit to Report Letter. The new Ensign at the door will ask for this to be allowed to proceed.

* If military family with valid military IDs, you can drive straight to Alumni Hall by 0600 and park; depending on reporting time, there's a donut 🍩 shop next to the Chapel. For civilians taking the bus from the stadium, allow at least 2 hours between boarding the bus and reporting time. It's ok to be early than late. There's going to be crazy traffic on the roads and human lines entering Gate 1.

* The day/night before I-day, practice driving to the stadium area (reconnaissance). It will give you an idea of 1,200 parents driving there during I-day. Focus on preparation for the next day's major once-in-a-lifetime event. Ensure binders are in order. Save all that sightseeing stuff during Parents' Weekend.

* Doors in Bancroft close after ceremony. This is the ultimate family Greek-Shakesperean tragedy drama. Many moms (and dads... allergies) are in tears. It's best to fly home and look forward to Parents' Weekend in late August.

The permit to report package will come with the BFE? or in an email? DS just accepted his appointment so it will be a while for the BFE to get here.

... Class of 2027 Permit to Report Package

... use as a guide only; C/O 2027 PTR was published late April. I don't recommend to use this verbatim because it's for '27. And there will be some changes for '28. But I think, you can assemble the binder(s) with all the tabs/labels, immunization records, prescription glasses, social security card, and birth certificate.

Is anybody else having difficulty accessing the "Naval Academy Accessions Questionnaire" in the portal? I downloaded the abode reader and cleared cache and I still cannot access.
If you do a search in this forum, you’ll find some troubleshooting ideas. Search Accessions.I know there has been discussions about it for at least the previous two cycles.

DS had the same problem. He was on a MAC and realized that “preview” was the default reader and when he changed to Adobe as default reader it opened up.

Thankfully, our county police HQ and our local City police HQ were able to do this while we waited. We explained the reason for the request and had the first page of the .pdf for them to review. They did ask for my DS's passport, which we had ready. Go Navy, beat Army!

... so near central MD, police, sheriff, city hall, and county clerk have no knowledge, you know as in the Roman Numeral zero, about background checks for USNA plebes to be. But the State Police just said, "OK," and processed the background check.

My DD can't open the questionnaire form either. We tried a few computers.
We had the same problem. Once we changed the default settings it was easy. Default settings may not be set to open with Adobe.

Oh the favored barbers our son has had. Not just the service he has received. But the relationships he has established. A special component of the USNA experience.

They deserve a special shout out and recognition.
To this day, I'm convinced that the script writers for "Coming to America" spent time in the 8th Wing barbershop in the early 80s. My grandfather was a professional featherweight boxer in NYC in the late 30s. Watched all kinds of old fights with him as a kid on black & white 8mm. Mr. Johnson, the lead barber, loved to talk boxing with me. Every time we started a conversation, it would take all of two minutes before things would be turned by one of the other barbers (usually Mr. Larkin) into the tried but true hypothetical all time best heavyweight debate. Mr. Johnson loved Joe Louis. Mr. Larkin was a big Muhammad Ali fan. Mr. Johnson would only refer to him as Cassius Clay. The movie stole his line as to why he did that - "That's the name his Momma gave him." I laughed out loud in the theater when I saw the barbershop scenes in that movie.

My DS did exactly the same. Showed up after school with a hard copy and a smile. Was congratulated, the form was filled on the spot, signed by the ranking police officer and emailed directly to the USNA admissions officer. He uploaded the form to the portal before my appointee even had a chance to get home.

Same! We went around after school today with the police record check forms & self addressed stamped envelopes for mailing to USNA. DS introduced himself, and explained what he was asking for. They were happy to help. I went along since he is 17, in case they wanted parental consent.
