This may be controversial, but I think the US govt. should only celebrate and acknowledge official US holidays. Let individuals celebrate whatever they wish. I don't see foreign governments celebrating US holidays, and rightly so. I don't expect nor want the US govt to acknowledge Oktoberfest nor St. Nicholas Day nor any of the other "holidays" we celebrated in my family. So I don't expect nor do I want the US govt to acknowledge nor celebrate Cinco de Mayo, St. Patrick's Day nor Nowruz. I can think of better use for my tax payer dollars than funding another party celebration and decorations at the White House.
Imagine turning the entire White House lawn into a giant biergarten for 16 days every October, open to the public, with the House of Representatives serving the citizens quart-sized steins of decent beer and the Senate proffering enormous salvers laden with Schweinebraten und Sauerkraut, and the President and his cabinet leading the singing. Oh, and since there are three legs to this stool the Supreme Court can provide the music. I understand Antonin Scalia and Notorious RBG are big opera buffs. so maybe they can do die Zauberflote.
It's a good thing you don';t know how much they spend every year hosting an Easter Egg hunt.
