How are there enough nominations to go around?

From my understanding, nominations can be obtained from US Senators, District Representatives, Vice President, Presidential, and USAFA can give some out themselves. Taking all of these in to account, that is roughly 100 + 435 + 1 + ? + ?

I may be missing something here because that certainly does not add up to the 1200 ish candidates that are appointed. I realize some senators and district representatives may be able to give more than 1 nomination each year, but that is not true for all of them. Do recruited athletes not need a nominations? I feel like I am missing a piece here. Thank you!

You're looking at possible appointment numbers.

Members of Congress (House and Senate) are allowed to nominate 10 individuals for each appointment they have open to them. Remember, MOCs may have a total of five "named" appointees at each SA. That doesn't mean "alternates" from the same MOC can't get it; they are fully capable of it and aren't charged "named" to the MOC.

There are unlimited numbers of nominations available in the Presidential Category.

First of all, each of the nominations that you listed are times 10 as each can nominate 10 for each "slot" although the academies are obligated to only take one of them. Additionally There are a number of other nomination sources including ROTC/JROTC, Presidential (children of career military), Secretary of the Army (Navy, AF, etc) noms which are for qualified enlisted people and some others.

@flieger83 nailed it! There are also nomination sources such as the Secretary of the Air Force, Superintendent of the Air Force Academy, and certain JROTC units.

Ohhh that must be where my misunderstanding is. So a candidate could go to USAFA under the nomination of a MOC, but not be "named" to that MOC and would not be a part of their 5?

Absolutely!

Perfect example...many years ago AZ Senator Jon Kyl had three openings...so he accepted his ALO's advice and decided to leave one slot open for the next year, but would nominate 20 students to compete for two openings.

LOOONG story short...two were appointed and "named" to Senator Kyl. The other 18 went into the "qualified alternate" pool.

At the end of the cycle, 12 of those 18 had been offered appointments!!

Senator Kyl wrote VERY nice letters of commendation for each AZ ALO!!

Ahhhh, wow! That clears things up a lot.

Thank you!

Is a recruited athlete another pool? Or are they in the qualified alternate pool?

All appointees need a nomination from an approved source. Recruited athletes get theirs from the same places. You’ll see the SA controls some of the nom categories.

Pore through this reference. I think there may be a later edition, but I haven’t found it yet. The core info on nom sources/numbers would not be likely to change.

My daughter got this email today from admissions:

"We are pleased to advise you that the Admissions Board has found you qualified to compete for admission to the United States Naval Academy with the Class of 2027. You are guaranteed an offer of appointment if your remaining admissions requirements are satisfactorily met. You should be proud of your outstanding accomplishments as you have earned an opportunity to join one of the country's premier officer training programs."

There was a couple of more sentences, but you get the gist. Is this the mystical LOA?

Walks like a duck. Quacks like a duck. Looks like the unicorn!

“Guaranteed an offer of appointment if your remaining admissions requirements are met.” What is left to meet? Nom? CFA? The app is in?

CFA is in. App is in. Her nom interviews are getting scheduled. She got a medical waiver last week. I'm not sure what else is left.
USNA will generally not mess with waivers if they do not think a candidate is competitive. With that said, this is very reassuring. As noted before, this LOA identifies what must be met to get the golden ticket. It looks like the NOM interview is the key. Your NOM source can nominate up to 10 names for each available slot. This gives lots of bandwidth for a nomination that will go into the mixmaster of admissions. Best of luck to your DD in this journey.

I checked with her a few mintues ago. Her two outstanding items on the portal are noms and waiver. While she got the greenlight from the doctor Thursday, it still has not worked it's way through the system.

Thank you for clearing this up! It makes the process slightly less daunting. My son is in a highly populated district with a lot of kids who apply and I was really worried he would not be the top pick for any of the sources but only having to make top 10 is a little less scary than having to be #1.
