Hello,

I am currently a junior in high school. My current GPA is a 3.7 with an ACT superscore of 27. For my senior year I am signed up to take several college level courses. I have already taken a few college and AP courses as well.

I am the battalion commander in my school's AJROTC unit. Before I was appointed to battalion commander I was a first sergeant for my company and before that I was a squad leader. I joined the program a year late after spending my freshman year at an institute geared towards getting me an associates degree in biomedical sciences. Within less than two years I took the battalion commander position. I have received the superior cadet award, U.S. Army Recruiting Command award, National Sojourners Award, Sons of the American Revolution Award, the Military Order of the Purple Heart Award, the Reserve Officers' Association Award, and am about to receive the Sons of Confederate Veterans Hunley Award. I have been a member of the drone and drill teams. I am the armed platoon commander and a senior member of the color guard team. I am the commander of the Raider Team.

Outside of JROTC I have not participated in any school extracurriculars. I have been a member of the Boy Scouts of America for a long time and currently am a Life Scout working towards eagle. I have completed and taught the Introduction to Leadership Training for Troops course (ILST), I have completed and staffed for the National Youth Leadership Training Course (NYLT) and completed the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience course (NAYLE). I have over 50 merit badges and have received brotherhood within the Order of the Arrow. Within my own troop I have served as an Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, Scribe, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and Senior Patrol Leader.

I have also been a member of a Mixed Martial Arts school that teaches Kyokushin Karate, Kickboxing, Judo, and Jiu Jitsu for over 6 years. With this I also joined a unit of police explorers. I currently have over 400 hours of community service.

Regarding my academics I have raised my GPA from a 2.7 to a 3.7 between the end of freshman year and today. My ACT score was raised by 3 points between retakes and I have recently opened an account with March2Success to study over the summer so I can retake the ACT. I will continue to retake the ACT until my scores are in the 30s.

For physical fitness I have not yet taken the CFA, only the JROTC Cadet Challenge. My current best one mile run time is a 6:21 down from 12:16. My 1 minute of push-ups has reached 45 up from 21. My sit-ups in 1 minute are 58 up from 44. Currently my biggest weakness is pull-ups which I have been working on. Since working towards West Point I cut my body weight from 225lbs down to 165lbs. I have worked my way back up to 180lbs, which for my height is where I should be.

I plan to continue to work on my physical fitness to reach competitive score levels. I am taking college classes next year to boost my GPA and as said earlier I will keep retaking the ACT until I get my score into the 30s. I also plan to get accepted into the National Honor Society.

Please leave any advice in the comments, thank you for your time.

Hey man, I applied to USAFA and got through that process with a Falcon Scholarship, not really the same but I have some grasp of understanding. You look like you would be a really competitive candidate by the time you apply! But, that award, the Hunley Award, I did some research on the org that provides it, and I do not think it would look so good to be associating with such an org. I understand that the org does not embrace bigotry, even has a zero tolerance for it, but the societal implications is really not in your favor. But of course, do as you will.

Your record looks good and sounds like you have a good plan. You identified the need to work on your CFA numbers, so keep good focus on your fitness, including running (as I tell my students) about 10 miles per week and ~ 3 mi per run. Be careful not to hit the distance too quickly if you are not accustomed to running. You may want to use some of the insights provided by Stew Smith, a military fitness expert and USNA grad (www.stewsmithfitness.com).

Definitely complete the Eagle project -- early congratulations to you (from another Eagle and Vigil Honor member of OA). One of my students at West Point also went to NAYLE.

I'm sure others will add some other advice. Keep up the good work!

or maybe you use that to show how you embrace diversity...
One essay prompt is:
  1. West Point and the Army are committed to the idea that respect for others and an understanding of diversity are important leadership traits. Why will you be successful in working with leaders, peers, and subordinates of a gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and/or religion different from your own?
So if Sons of Confederates Veterans is I am guessing NONDIVERSE and trying to keep it that way, what are you doing to expose yourself to others of different gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and/or religion different from your own? What are you doing to help recruit diverse members to AJROTC or your Boy Scout troop? or if those groups are diverse, are you helping others feel included? Mentoring them for leadership positions?
