I-Day 2020

We are going by the PTR letter's June 25th, but are still hesitant to purchase DS's airline ticket. Solo? Together? Reading the previous responses, it sounds like we'll be seeing him off from home :(

The wheels of USNA are turning! Plans for getting the next phase of getting everyone’s stuff cleared from Bancroft are moving forward! Mids are scheduling their move out dates (within a certain radius), the remaining stuff to be boxed up and stored via contractors (nothing could go wrong with this, right 🤞🙏🤞🙏?!?).

Truly historical stuff going on here. It’s amazing. Hats off to leadership. I suspect policy will be made from how all this went down this summer. I’m amazed. And have faith they will pull off plebe summer, and on time, the way things are going. Kuddos to all that are working so hard!!

I woundnt hesitate, and in fact personally would encourage people, to buy any and all tickets. Look at the airlines website. Most have very friendly COVID cancellation policies presently. It’s a buyers market!! And as always, Southwest has a fully cancellable policy as standard, so they are our personal go-to. We also have a refundable Airbnb purchased. Even if parents aren’t allowed on the yard, we will let our plebe decide, up to refundable cancellation deadline, if he wants us to take him out there or not.

Looks like my alma mater (USAFA) is sticking with the 25th of June for I-day. I'd be very surprised if USNA doesn't do the same. I know our soon to be detailer is chomping at the bit to get out of Dodge and back to the real work. He detailed last summer and will again this year for the last time, so it will be interesting to hear all the differences.

I was shocked yesterday when I made my plane reservation on Southwest. I booked my flight, car AND a hotel IN Annapolis for a ridiculously low price. The biggest shock was finding a nice hotel IN ANNAPOLIS. The room thing can be difficult when booking around any major event at USNA. Also, if you book your car and hotel just opt to pay later and in most times 100% cancellable without charges.

The two I-Days (USAFA and USNA) typically coincide, so that's probably right for USNA. I always wondered what people would do if they had twins with one going to I-Day in Colorado and the other going to I-Day in Maryland. I'll bet it has happened in the past.

What about a single parent in that scenario? Talk about being between a rock and a hard place. "I'm going to Annapolis with your sister because we can drive, and it's only 2 hours away. Colorado Springs takes 26 hours, so..."

@THParent I’m sorry if this is a bit nit picky but the situation you outlined is more common than you might think. This is not exclusive to twins: single parents often have to choose between attending either child’s function, or in some cases missing both to go to work as the sole provider. I assume you meant no harm with this comment, but to me it came of a tad flippant. It can be a painful and frustrating situation for all involved. I mean no disrespect, just how I interpreted it.

Oh! Did NOT mean to be flippant at all !
I seriously think that it would be terrible to have to choose.

We sponsored a USNA mid with a sib at USMA, both graduating. I picked up parents, new Ensign and sister right after graduation on Friday and drove them to BWI to get up to West Point. They had split duties earlier that week, Dad had been up at USMA for some social stuff, then took a late train to BWI to catch some of the USNA social.

We had a sponsor mid who graduated USNA same day as sister’s HS graduation. Dad came to USNA for that, and I drive him to BWI so he could be there for some of the HS party event. Tough day for all.

I don't mean to be flippant, either, but think about what a nice problem this would be to have. Imagine the alternative where you don't have this problem--only one got in, or none got in. Problems are folks laid off due to the pandemic, for example, who have to choose between food and paying the rent. Let's keep it in perspective--this is an inconvenience by comparison.

There is presently a set at usna/usafa. My friends young adults. Yes they divide and take turns going to the other. A challenge, yes. But I’ve never heard a complaint!

Almost. Still don’t know the exact date for our people, but it’s forthcoming!!

I wonder if they will have to report at O Dark 30. If we stick him on a plane alone, it would be easier to not have to figure out a hotel for him.

I wouldn’t worry about the flight and accommodations. USNA will take care of all of this to include pick up at the airport and a room in Bancroft. Although slightly different they do this every year.

Guessing the those two weeks of ROM will be rather boring compared to the rest of the summer. But guessing they will pack tons of the classes usually spread out over 6 weeks into those 2 weeks. Should be interesting to watch it unfold as this has never been done and is a great lesson in understanding the priorities, risk management and adapt and over come.

Oh and ensure to do those going away parties early! I know most states have restrictions on sizes of gatherings right now and many will want to have a going away party. Get them in before the 2 weeks ROM at home to be safe!

I'm so impressed with leadership resolving so many issues simultaneously. I guess they're used to it, but they managed to adjust to the circumstances and make graduation, commissioning and I-day happen. Nice to know my plebe-to-be will be in such good hands.
