I-Day Parent Questions

If you go to the Welcoming Picnic on Hospital Point and if it's catered by Mission BBQ you won't have to worry about being hungry for many hours.
LOL I know - I went in 2019.

It was good food … great weather.

There is lunch, usually cold cut sandwiches (still after all these decades) as it’s an easier meal with tables coming in over several hours. There is also dinner after the swearing in. Some never remember eating. They will not starve. Many are too anxious to eat. They will also be the most hydrated humans on the planet after 3 days there. They will get plenty of food. They changed things a few decades ago to ensure they got to eat. By the way, all great changes. It’s the detailers responsibility to ensure they eat, even if it’s boxed lunches or special tables for those standing watch. They will all be okay, we all made it and so will they. There are more things in place today such as lots of gatorade, their own running shoes, anti bacterial soap. These changes occurred awhile ago to help with heat injuries, stress injuries and heat rash. How and when they can be PT’d is more controlled. Again, all good changes to prevent injuries and preventable issues that take Plebes out of training. The goal is for them to participate fully in training, therefore they need to eat, hydrate, and not get stress injuries.

Great point! For the family it was good food and nice cold drinks and great to just sit ourselves under a tent and relax. It was very humid last year. It's a nice event, met some other families, and most of all super convenient.

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to get lunch for the picnic following the swearing in ceremony.
Whatever you bring, likely it will be exposed to the hot humid weather for a couple hours between purchase and consumption so I’d avoid anything that requires proper storage. We brought a sandwich (no mayo) and a soda which was enjoyed prior to our goodbyes. If you do nothing they won’t starve either.

Do not confuse the midday/lunchtime picnic/BBQ for parents on Hospital Point you can buy tickets for through the USNA Alumni Assn with the short period of time just after the oath ceremony at end of day where you get to say “see you soon” and hug your new plebe. That’s when they get to sit down for a few minutes with you, sip some water and nibble on something you brought.

This link will be updated soon for Class of 2027. Worth reading to get a feel for the day, assuming it sticks to usual schedule. The USNA Alumni Assn is is an independent non-profit which coordinates with Parents Clubs.

We ordered two days in advance with The Big Cheese. They were very easy to work with. We set a desired time for pick up and had a collapsible cooler with us to keep them cool.
We also did Big Cheese. Really close for pick up. We brought a ton of drinks, snacks and the sandwich was huge. Everything I read said he would be starving. He barely ate.

For I-day 2021, we ordered box lunches from Dahlgren for us to eat and had an extra that we saved for DS. He only wanted cold water and gatorade which we did not have enough of! I did witness some Plebes chowing on as much food as they could so it all depends on your kid and how they handle stress. Some stress eat, some stress fast. But all need cold drinks.

We are traveling from a far west state so I am wondering what to plan for travel. We are getting in Tuesday afternoon to give DS a full day before drop off. I-Day is tentatively scheduled for Thursday. What day do they take their oath? After that I assume it’s time to leave the yard as we won’t see DS until PPW.

Smart move - we are in the SW and travel can be rough. You’ll see them for about 20 minutes after the oath on I-Day and then it’s worth staying around to see the doors shut. While you might want to pre-plan a meeting place, we just hung out by the last name letters on Stribling and found our plebe pretty easily.

Edited to add, our plebe didn’t home for thanksgiving and did just fine. Also, they were pretty anxious to get back on PPW Sunday so we left before they had to report. Harder for the parents:)

Lol - one more: Have a blast meeting other parents and alums in the airport. “Son or daughter? Where you from?” I still talk to some of my fellow travelers!

I-day is Thursday and the oath will be administered that evening at 6P, they will march into Bancroft around 7:15PM and then everyone leaves.

Correct, next time they'll see you is PPW.

And we will get some phone calls, correct? I can't believe she's 71 days away from I Day.

Yes, there are 3 scheduled phone calls during PS- usually scheduled on Sunday afternoons every 2 weeks. Plebes are given their cell phones for a timed call. The schedule will be shared with parents at the info session in Alumni Hall on I-Day.

Thank you for the detail. Her mom (no, really. it has been her mom) has been worried about how often we'd get calls.

If you can't go to the info session don't worry about it. You'll get letter via snail mail with the schedule and it'll be a popular topic on the Class of 2027 BLB Facebook page.

The three calls during Plebe Summer are voice only calls, no Facetime allowed due to bandwidth challenges. Facetime calls began with the start of academic year. Our cell coverage is through Verizon, no issues with service except for IDay.

Thanks for that...I'm not much of a Facetime user anyway. I was told long ago, I have a face made for phone sales. I guess that joke wouldn't make sense to the young'uns.
