If you received a TWE...

Steve's TWE story

I've posted this before, but in case one or more of you have missed it...

In 1978 I was a candidate for:

a. USAFA
b. USNA
c. USMA
d. USCGA

I was the "big man on campus" at my HS which was: Air Academy High School! Yes, on the grounds of USAFA! My father was the hospital commander at USAFA. I NEVER cracked a book in HS...I was "lucky/gifted" and never studied, and I pulled a 4.00 UNWEIGHTED GPA. I was also a 3 sport letterman, had a job, CAP, etc...etc...my package was PERFECT.

Well...almost perfect..there was that minor nuisance of an SAT of 550V, 560M.

I received TWE's from: USAFA/USNA/USMA/USCGA

CRUSHED!!! :rocket:

Then...I was afforded the opportunity to go to prep school; if I chose to give up my 4 year AFROTC scholarship.

I chose to do just that...gave up ALL the scholarships I had to attend a prep school (Northwestern Prep) that gave no college credit.

Long story short...in the end, I received BFE's to:

USAFA
USNA
USMA
USCGA (I was an alternate...those folks are TOUGH!) :bang:

It worked!! And then I went to USAFA...and came within a whisker of flunking out! I actually went before a disenrollment board because of academic deficiency. That place kicked my bu** left, right, and center. :stretcher:

And I wouldn't change a bit of it! That adversity made me who I am today!!!

Those of you receiving TWE's...this is simply a small "bump in your road" and do NOT let it stop you in our goals!!

Look at ALL you've accomplished this year!! OH MY!!! Think back...to where you were, and where you are...you are all in the top 10% of students in the ENTIRE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! :jump1:

WOW!!! :worship:

I will ditto vamom, thanks Steve I too will share this with my DS. He didn't talk much after reading the TWE, read it once put it down went to his room. 20 minutes later he returned from his room read TWE again put it back on kitchen table said no word went back to room and went to bed. In the morning we talked a little before school, later that night he came home from school/work and was pumped up about plan b school. :thumb:

Ya NWP for life!! Great story thanks for sharing!! I definetly second that I gave up a chance to go to Any UC and don't regret it for one second. NWP was an awsome experience and no on June 23 I will be entering USAFA!!

Steve, that is an amazing post. You are "good people," sir. :) We need more ALOs like you out there, and for all the reasons you stated so awesomely!

I, too, got the TWE, but then received a VERY late, June appointment offer. Yikes! This is why I am telling everyone here that if you are entertaining the tiniest thought of still going, don't stop your physical conditioning! If you get one of the LATE offers, you won't have time to get back in shape. Come BEAST, you don't want to be the one dropping back from the herd. Better to get face time for kicking butt!!!!!!!

Steve-
I want to thank you as well! I, too, will have DS sit down and read about your experience. We greatly appreciate all you do here as well as an ALO!

Steve, you have been amazing. My son's ALO was very hard to reach, very slow to respond to email, never returned a phone call and basically disappeared. I won't name the state or the name, because we have respect for the work he has done for kids and give thanks for the service he provided the country in a multitude of other ways.

I think that you should give feedback about your ALO to the USAFA after this process is over. Even though it is a volunteer job, it is very important to the candidates - and only those who really can commit the time and be responsive should be in that role.

After talking to the counselor at the USAFA about the QNV letter, I asked about the bold faced part of the letter. Almost zero chance of getting an appointment at this point as they have already factored in a rejection rate (i.e. given out more appts then vacancies). We have moved on (not sure if my daughter would have accepted it anyway, more my idea than hers), but if your son/duaghter really wants to go, they just need a year of college under their belt and reappy. They will have a good shot at it even though next years numbers will be even lower than this year. Doesn't have to be thru the FF or prep school either.

DS rec'd the TWE to USMA today....after getting a NWL Qualified letter last week. Very Sad.... still waiting on SOMETHING from AFA....Have a feeling its coming soon... I just hope it doesn't come a day after getting the TWE today! DS is confused... why even put him on the NWL last week at all? He is going to reapply next year if the TWE comes tomarrow from AFA. He has a 4 year AROTC and will do that as he works hard in school and tries again for AFA. When somethings been your dream since the 3rd grade you have to give it more then one try....

One more try!?!? More like try every year until you are too old. If it is your dream, never give up! Don't let one letter stray you from your goals!

Thanks...Snowy on April fools day in Jersey...we'll see what the mail brings today. DS already sent an Email to Rep. Holt and told him that he was on the wait list but did not get in but would be appliying next year and thank you for the nomination.

TWE from USMA yesterday after a WL three weeks ago. I was triple qualified, a legacy, two nominations and sister of senior. I found out from one of the USMA coaches today that they cannot even get the recruits they need. Today I received a letter that confuses me from USAFA. It reads like WL but does not say WL anywhere. I have a great Plan B so I am OK. Just tired of the wait! I gues that is why patience is a virtue!

Yah, yesterday I received the TWE that states, not word for word but implies, that i'm on the wait list... This was my third time applying. I went to NWP and am doing AFROTC with a 3.0 college GPA. Kind of frustrated.
