Induction Day Motivation!

They are getting Boxing headgear issued to them?
That's not fair, one of the "best" part of USNA boxing was putting on sweaty and smelly headgear that had just come off of the preceding class.
> Good gouge -- take PE first thing in the morning. Doesn't stink so bad. (Key words...so bad; they headgear we used was probably in use when OldRetSWO was a MIDN)

DH recited the “salt thing” while paging through the photos. Burned into the oldest parts of the brain, I think.
That happens -- I can recite "Why didn't you say Sir..." 40 years after graduation. (I think its the only thing I still remember from Plebe rates, but its hard wired into my brain, and I really don't ever recall forgetting to say sir ...)

And a reminder to all. . . "Fidelity is Up and Obedience is Down" (ask your mids)
Just checked DD’s white works belt buckle, which she bequeathed to me after plebe summer. I can confirm that indeed “fidelity is up and obedience is down.” Unless I’m holding it wrong. 🤣

Getting to keep it is a new thing. For many years, that belt and belt buckle were part of the rifle and bayonet issue and the mids did not "own" them, they just had to keep them clean and shiny.

I still have "how's the cow?" and "how long have you been in the Navy?" and I'd probably recognize other rates if someone started them out. Sprout (11 yesterday!) thinks they're hilarious. The "salt thing" escapes me.

Ok, jump on the throwback train - have fun scrolling through this vintage Reef Points. Scan to p. 229 and nearby fun pages for the fun memory stuff old grads keep in their brains forever.

The “salt thing” I conflated with “Table Salt,” a category where the first entry is “How long have you been in the Navy?” “All me bloomin’ life, sir…”

How long have you been in the Navy?

All me bloomin' life, sir!
Me mother was a mermaid
Me father was King Neptune.
I was born on the crest of a wave and rocked in the cradle of the deep.
Seaweed and barnacles are me clothes.
Every tooth in me head is a marlinspike; the hair on me head is hemp.
Every bone in me body is a spar, and when I spits, I spits tar!
I'se hard, I is, I am, I are !

(emphasis added) ;)

I am guessing they don't still bus in 1000 of Baltimore-Washington area young ladies for the 6 annual Plebe Tea Dances. Or were these another casualty last year due to Covid? (p137)

DH notes they used to be called “Tea Fights.” I believe that particular practice is several years gone.

We used shared head gear for my class. Probably the same ones @Old Navy BGO used! No A/C. No dramatic March in after I Day. Same experience as the other OGs… try to find your room and got destroyed in the process. Took 2 hours to get everyone back to the right place and 100s and 100s of push ups. It was pure mayhem looking back on it.

This was fascinating! It inspired me to see if I could find a similar one for USCGA. For the class of 1972:
http://cga72.pinedrivetel.com/USCGA_Running_Light_1972.pdf

It is amusing to see the similarities and differences between the two, much of indoc is the same (How long have you been in the CG/Navy? What time is it? How's the cow? and so many more).

It's also interesting to see just how much has stayed the same as time has passed, and also just how much has changed. There a couple of things in the 1972 Running Light that I wish still existed today, while I'm glad that others are no longer traditions (such as the Corps no longer being all male ;) ).

As for what has stuck in my brain as time has gone by, page 212 of the Coast Guardsman Manual ("Discipline"), which we were "encouraged" to recite often as we held the manual out in front of us:

Like moral responsibility, discipline is another word with more than one meaning. Sometimes discipline is used to mean punishment, but the real meaning of discipline can best be described by the words right attitude. Well disciplined people have the right attitudes. They respect their leaders, and believe they are getting a square deal from them. They behave in a military manner, wear the right uniforms, take pride in their division, their ship, or their station, and are ready to fight bravely in the defense of their country.

When discipline fails, that is, when some people do not have the right attitude, then punishment may be necessary for those who refuse to observe the rules and regulations. In the Coast Guard, as in civilian life, laws orders and regulations must be obeyed. And those who do not are subject to trial by court-martial, which can punish them according to the laws.

Yep, that's how I remember it: absolute mayhem. That and not knowing about first class ladders: oopsie daisy!

I had a command master chief who told people he had been in the navy so long he was at the pier with his seabag waiting for the water to come in. He spent 10 years on that ship.

Probably had his first cruise with CAPT Noah on USS ARK, later with CAPT Moses on USS BULRUSH.

those seats are for parents - I was there today!!! it was so freaking hot - we saw 5 detailers pass out!!!! they got dragged off by the medical corp - it was really hot!!!!!
My wife was at Walter Reed derm clinic last week and one of the HMs helping with her procedure volunteered for and was chosen to provide medical coverage for plebe summer.

wow that is great!!! I was actually amazed at how fast the medical peeps came and got the kids that fainted out of the lines and over to ice them down.......my plebe said the detailers were yelling at them to drink water from their canteens every 5 mins so they did not faint - I guess the detailers were not drinking enough........and the sun was beaming on them.....felt so bad for them.
